Attackers “stole” data from 13 million Maple Story players

Late last week, Nexon Korea Corp., the developer of the popular online game Maple Story, announced hacking of game servers. According to company experts, crackers gained access to the data of millions of game users, including IDs, names, passwords and registration state numbers.

In total, about 13 million users were affected as a result (in general, this is the main part of the toy’s audience). Now the game has about 18 million players, it turns out that the data of 5 million people were untouched. In any case, while experts say so. Perhaps this was a “custom-made" promotion, since Nexon Korea Corp. in a few weeks was going to go on IPO. Well, with such news, the exchange may not be very supportive of the company.

Now the company is going to hire (if not already hired) 30 computer security specialists. Also Nexon Korea Corp. has strengthened its server security measures in key regions, such as Europe, Asia and North America. Of course, "they don’t wave their fists after the fight," but perhaps the security measures taken will help reduce the likelihood of subsequent hacks. At least, Sony Corporation, which was probably the hardest hit by hackers this year, has taken appropriate measures, and so far no new hacks have been heard.

Regarding payment data and user credit cards, Nexon Korea Corp. claim that this data was not affected. Well, and the total cost of Nexon is now estimated at about 1.2 billion US dollars. In any case, that’s how much this company planned to attract when entering an IPO. Probably in the near future Nexon will have to postpone the exit, or deal with the hack as soon as possible so that you can gain investor confidence.
