Disassembly of factory-made 18650 lithium-ion batteries

    Hello! For a long time I was asked to compare the factory batteries 18650 versus the fake 18650 battery from the “aliexpress”.

    On the test, three banks of laptop batteries Futjitsu-Siemens (blue bank), Lenovo (red bank), HP (green bank). Batteries with long shelf life, more than five years. Therefore, their resource is deplorable, but some batteries still work. Batteries are suitable for powering flashlights or other gadgets, although the batteries are old, they do their job.
    The numbers on the banks:
    - LG LGES318650, blue bank;
    - Noname NK6M4ED030541, red can;
    - Sony US8650GRG5, green can.
    Red battery, as written in the comments, perhaps this is the bank Sanyo.

    The blue LG battery after disassembly turned out to be not so high quality, I expected more. It can be seen that there is a loose packing of the internal base of the battery, which suggests a small length of the cathode and anode. The capacity of such a battery will be lower than stated.

    When disassembling 18650 batteries or other lithium-ion batteries, you should approach this process with increased accuracy so as not to short-circuit the battery. As can be seen in the photo, even a careful disassembly caused damage to the element, which led to the beginning of the exothermic reaction with the heating of the battery. But since the bank was dismantled, this process was limited to the release of an indefinite gas, possibly oxygen.

    Batteries on the dough have a similar internal structure. Only the blue can has a drain valve and loose packing. The length of the cathode and anode in this bank is less than in red and green.

    Batteries vary greatly in the structure of the drain valve. The most complicated valve in execution is in the green can. The easiest one is at the blue can. It seems that in the production of blue cans for LG saved.

    High-quality on execution were Sony rechargeable batteries, Noname (red bank, possibly Sanyo). In these batteries, a complex drain valve, dense packing of the elements of the battery. By all accounts, the red bank (possibly Sanyo) and the Sony battery win. Factory LG bank performed poorly, but better than a fake with "aliexpress". Disassembly of a fake battery can be viewed in the video - youtu.be/r1xHjmWZimI , where the density of the packing of the inner element is small.

    This is how a disassembled battery cell looks like, on which you can see copper foil - the anode, aluminum foil - the cathode. A carbon matrix with embedded lithium ions is deposited on the anode, which forms the structure of lithium carbon six - LiC6. The cathode consists of aluminum foil coated with cobalt oxide - LiСоO2.
    The electrodes are separated by a porous polypropylene separator, and the entire assembly is placed in the electrolyte.

    The final table. Measurement parameters are approximate. In my opinion, the red Noname battery (possibly Sanyo) won, but the Sony battery also showed good results, which is not to say about the LG bank.

    Do not disassemble lithium-ion batteries at home - cripple or burn the surrounding space.
