View FullHD Video on Intel Atom N450

I recently bought a 21.5-inch monitor and was not very happy when my Samsung N150 did not draw 1080p and even sometimes 720p.
Not many people know that, for example, the Intel GMA 3150 supports hardware MPEG2 decoding.
On the Internet, when searching for “1080p on a netbook,” everyone says it's impossible! There is a solution that allows you to watch it almost without loss of original quality.

But how?!

But just need to transcode the video like this (for example, ffmpeg)
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -b 5000k -threads 4 -acodec copy -vcodec mpeg4 output.avi
this video will have similar quality, you can specify -sameq instead of "" -b 5000k "if you are sure that the BD source for example, otherwise it will slow down, weigh a lot and have a very large bitrate .
  • 5000-7000k - for 720p
  • 5000-9000k for 1080p (at 5000 there may be quality loss in very dynamic scenes, with 9000 "squares" should not be)

results

When transcoding using -b 5000k at the same place, the load from 100% (brakes) changed smoothly at 40-60% and this is at 1080p on a netbook for 7,000 rubles! sameq gives slightly worse results, but with almost the same quality we get a 20-50% gain.

What's the catch?

  1. Transcoding takes time, so when watching TV shows it will be easier to transcode on the "big brother" and look at the netbook without brakes.
  2. mpeg4 with the same quality will weigh about 30% more
  3. mpeg4 has a slightly worse quality (connoisseurs will notice, but I think connoisseurs will have better equipment)

The video is smooth and does not slow down. Without any CoreAVC, etc. I apologize for the brevity - you won’t write much here, but I think the information will be important to many.
I hope this little note helps people watch FullHD on netbooks and weak nettops.
