Debian Day 2010

Today is not only Internet Explorer's birthday . Two years earlier, in 1993, Jan Murdoch announced the start of development of the “Debian Linux Release” system. The name "Debian" is made up of the names of Murdoch ( Ian ) and his girlfriend (now ex-wife) Debra ( Deb ra).

Now Debian is one of the most popular Linux distributions, having a significant impact on the development of other distributions. Debian has the largest package repository of all distributions and the number of supported architectures. Debian has become the basis for more than a hundred distributions, the most famous of which are Adamantix, Bioknoppix, Dreamlinux, Clusterix, Gnoppix, Knoppix, Ubuntu, Libranet, Linspire, MEPIS and Xandros Desktop OS.

Today the project is 17 years old.
