Rare breed coolers
When I posted this picture on my Twitter and asked what is shown on it, I found out how limitless human imagination is.
The options ranged from trivial options such as “speakers, keyboard, solar-powered charger, external screw or powder box” to extravagant “business card scanner, money clip, waffle iron, knife sharpener and mold for casting devices like the one lying next to HD2”. And it’s only now, after reading the headline, it seems that everything is obvious ...
In fact, everything turned out to be much simpler - when quite a while ago I visited DeDaLWell, who now works at Thermaltake, saw funny unusual gizmos, which he begged for a while. For the most part, for fun, because I hadn’t come across anything like this before. Moreover, since no one knows about this product.
But she is quite unusual. So, Luxa2 (read lu-sa-tu in English) was founded in 2009 and is a subsidiary of Thermaltake. The main vector of development is the creation of premium accessories for Apple products, as well as the production of completely independent devices such as media centers. I myself do not really like the word “premium” - those who really do nothing premium have very much vulgarized it. However, looking at the products, it is difficult to find a more suitable word. The motto is good - "Uniquely You."
Today I’ll talk about three devices that make up the almost complete lineup of the “Laptop Cooler” section on the company’s website, with the exception of one of the largest models (if I hadn’t delivered it then). In decreasing order - Luxa2 M2, M3-Air and M4.
I must say right away that I did not have a macbook during the test - everyone clamped it) Therefore, there was nothing left but to test on what is. And as a test instance I tookNokia netbook - in addition to the external resemblance, the netbook has exactly the same flat bottom as Apple's laptops. The processor location is probably different, but the device from Nokia is cooled extremely passively, so for tests this is the same thing (cooling the device without error on the total noise).
All devices of the company are delivered in stylish covers made of genuine leather - the color of ivory (basic) harmonizes very well with brown accents. Magnetic clasps and a carabiner for carrying - everything is there.
The device itself is silver - completely aluminum, matte and rough. On the case there is a pair of straziks - don’t know ...) But the build quality is an exceptional five with a plus, here you just can’t complain. Massive such a piece of aluminum (430g with dimensions 86x34x162mm in assembled form), consisting of two parts connected by a hinged mechanism - already the hand rejoices.
And then everything is simple - at times when the laptop is very hot, we expand the piece of iron and put it under the laptop. On the inside of the stand, on the one hand, there is a 50mm cooler (behind the grid; 3000rpm, 7.1 CFM airflow) with a retractable USB cord (15cm), and on the other, a special thermal interface, somewhat reminiscent of thermal grease.
The difference is that it remains on the device all the time and leaves no traces - it is needed only for more efficient heat transfer from the laptop case to the heat sink stand. The USB-cord is interesting - it takes up one port, but it frees it up - you can plug another device directly through the wire from the stand.
The result of the work can be considered a decrease in the temperature of the processor (!) By 5 degrees - this is how much the most distant heat source cools. Accordingly, the case is also cooled, but I have not seen any temperature sensors on the case (except for the thermometer). It is a decent result, and perhaps on macbooks it will be even better.
Pros and cons
Stylish cover
Pleasant design, excellent assembly
Extremely efficient device cooling
Well - thought - out design, “functional” USB cable
Slight noise during operation (on specs - 17.5 dB-A)
Not suitable for all laptops
It will be necessary to move the laptop synchronously with the stand
Actually, all three minuses are quite logical and not significant - I wrote them only to complete the picture - they will also be valid for the other two devices in this article. By the way, this stand is designed only for MacBook 13 ", MacBook Air 13", MacBook Pro 13 "and 15", but as you can see, it didn’t stop me using it on a Nokia netbook :)
Almost everything is the same as in the case of M2, only in a more compact body (weight 240g at 33x162x44mm in assembled form) - the manufacturer calls it that, “half the size of M2”.
The same label, the same rhinestones, about the same case - all the same, just just smaller. The cooler has also shrunk - now it is a 30mm carlsonchik capable of driving up to 2.6 cubic feet (CFM) of air per minute. But the noise increased - 19dB-A at 5600 (!) Rpm.
To check the performance, I had to carefully load the netbook from the outlet, which took a decent amount of time. But the result was almost the same, 4-5 degrees. Compatibility is still the same - MacBook 13 ", MacBook Air 13", MacBook Pro 13 "and 15", the pros and cons are absolutely identical to the M2 model.
It’s almost not like a waffle iron anymore - maximum a knife sharpener :)
It would be completely ridiculous if the model of the M4 cooler, by analogy, were a sort of wand, “half the size of M3”. A complete surprise - inside the leather case in the shape of a cube (as they say, “size of a Rubiks cube”) ... lay unknown ... well, you understand)
A small metal case in the form of a cylinder - recognizable rough aluminum, rhinestones ... but this time with white decorative mesh and rubber legs. I’m almost sure that in the case of the repeated question on Twitter, 19 out of 20 people would say that it is “yo-yo” or “portable speakers”, but not a portable cooler stand.
I myself didn’t immediately dopper, like what and where ... in general, a complete break in the template)
But in reality, everything is simple again - we divide the case into two parts - in one is the familiar USB-cable, and therefore the cooler. The second part of the body serves exclusively as a stand, for balance.
Accordingly, the result will definitely not be the same as in the case of M2 and M3 - there is no thermal interface and a massive heat sink body. Accordingly, those insights that the MacBook processor is located in the right or left corner of the device have become more persistent. I don’t know exactly where the processor is in Nokia’s netbook - for the most part only the battery was warming up there ... but for balance and ease of use, I had to put pancakes right at the corners.
The cooler is exactly the same as in the M3 - 30x30mm (5600rpm, 2.6CFM, 19dB-A), and the dimensions of the complete assembly are 62x62x39mm (with a weight of 165g). The result is more modest - the processor temperature dropped by only 1-2 degrees, but again, perhaps with the MacBooks the situation is more significant. The supported lineup is as follows - MacBook 13 ", MacBook Air 13", MacBook Pro 13 ", 15" and 17 ".
The disadvantages include less efficiency and greater discomfort when transporting a working laptop.
To complete the picture, I decided to write a few words about this "luska" - I saw it live, but did not take it for a test. And, it seems, in vain - this stand has almost nothing in common with all other models. By the way, here it is literally a stand - an almost two-kilogram (1800 g) thick sheet of aluminum (50x386x303mm) has 4 movable legs - for some reason, associations with some scorpions, headcrabs and other fauna are immediately born. But it looks incomparable - a rare stand with a similar price tag can be compared in terms of workmanship and, perhaps, design.
This time it is an absolutely silent stand (exclusively on passive cooling) - instead of coolers on the case there are two already familiar elongated areas of “thermal paste”, under which there are heat pipes. I can’t judge the effectiveness, but definitely for sure - wearing a laptop on such a stand will be very convenient, and in addition to cooling, it allows you to adjust the angle of the laptop. I repeat - it looks extremely cool.
Well, that’s probably all. I have not seen such coolers on store shelves, but they are on the Internet. The largest Lyuska (M1) costs 3000 rubles, M2 - 2000, the “golden mean” of the M3-Air will cost 1700 and the yo-yo M4 - 1400 rubles. On the one hand - quite a lot, on the other hand I recall my two Chinese coasters - they cost the same (even more expensive), but they don't look so awesome. As well as a stylish cover for them, too, no.
Should these devices be recommended for purchase? I can, because the devices are really good in every sense of the word. Another question is whether you need it. Perhaps it’s wonderful to live without cooler stands, then it will be a waste of money. But if the laptop is often under load and decently warms up, while most of the time it is on the table - such accessories are very suitable.
I advise you to get acquainted with the range of devices that the manufacturer offers . And if I don’t have iPhones, iPods, iPads, then the media centers of the company aroused great interest. I saw one ... I really wanted it) Therefore, maybe someday I will write something else if DeDaL doesn’t do it.
Good luck!
