ASUS K52 - about laptop and helicopter

       Most recently, I wrote that with the release of new Atoms, all netbooks made a new round in the development spiral. And today you can say the same thing about all other devices (including laptops) - because, as you know, at the beginning of the year Intel introduced many new processors of the Core family.

    image

    I managed to get one of these laptops ... well, then you know.

       In general, the name of the model involuntarily causes some associations - yes, yes, with the very legendary Ka-52 Alligator helicopter . But this is where all the similarities end. The five in the name of the model signals us about the diagonal of the screen (15 inches, respectively), and the two - just indicates that we have a second-generation model.

       The rest is one of the first laptops (not only from ASUS, but in general) built on a new platform, the “heart” of which is a dual-core Intel Core i5 430M processor with a clock frequency of 2.26GHz (it easily accelerates to 2.53GHz). The product is complemented by a fairly productive filling - discrete graphics card ATI HD5470with a gigabyte of memory, 4 gigabytes of RAM and another 500 on the hard drive. Interesting? Still would!

    Full version specifics

    image Appearance

       Since this laptop is a logical continuation of the K-series, it is not surprising that the design is almost completely inherited from the pioneers. However, there are minor differences.

    image

       For example, now, when opening a laptop, a user can put his hands on a pleasant rough (textured) surface, and not on a “varnished grand piano”. It seems that the manufacturer really realized that the matte surface is more practical - I hope it will continue to be used in an increasing number of devices.

       On the sides there is almost everything you need - 3xUSB, HDMI, D-Sub, a card reader, two audio connectors, a gigabit RJ-45 port and a drive for discs (DVD).

    image

    imageThe screen has a diagonal of 15.6 inches, while the standard resolution is 1366x768 (16: 9). LED backlight, all things - the picture is really good.

    imageThe keyboard is full, with a digital block. The buttons are large, with rounded corners, separated by small gaps. The layout is standard, although with such a large number of keys the second Fn button was sometimes missing (to the right of the space bar). The key travel is small and they do not click when typing.

       The touchpad is made in the form of a small rectangular recess in the part of the body under the keyboard - this solution will not allow dust to accumulate (because there are no corners or dissimilar materials), and, at the same time, it will contribute to a “blind tactile” search. As elsewhere, under it is a large combined chrome button and several LEDs (they are already on the front panel).

       The weight of the device is 2.6 kg with a battery, and with a charger - all 3. The dimensions of the laptop are 380x255x34.5-35.7 mm.

    image Performance

       Immediately after switching on, several status LEDs light up on the front of the netbook (under the touchpad). The noise from the work is almost inaudible - the device works really quietly.

       Due to the fact that Hyper Threading runs on both cores of the dual-core Core i5, the processor is capable of processing up to 4 threads simultaneously - until recently, it was only available on processors such as Core 2 Quad. Apparently, this is due to the high processor performance.

    image

       Judge for yourself - in the arithmetic test Super Pi , the number of Pi to a million on a K52Jr laptop is considered to be in 17.815 seconds. While the ASUS VX5 Lamborghini fashion laptop (just on the Core 2 Quad) does the same for 22.324seconds! And this despite the fact that the K52 is three times cheaper.

       An interesting point in this model is the discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470 graphics card with 1GB DDR3 and DirectX11 support. More precisely, it’s interesting not so much the presence of the card itself as the ability to switch from integrated (in the processor!) Intel HD Graphics video system to a discrete one, depending on needs.

    image

       For example, working from the network, you can not save the battery and "squeeze" to the fullest, while on the road, the built-in video may well be enough. This technology is called Intel Switchable Graphics.and definitely has the right to life. For comparison, in the 3D Mark 2006 synthetic test, integrated vidyuha gains 1350 parrots, while discrete - 4180.

       Inside there is a 500GB hard drive, the speed characteristics of which are as follows:

    image

    image

       The initial version of Windows 7 is installed on the laptop, the image of which is on in any case, it is recorded on a hidden disk partition (you can get a fully working Axis from which in 15 minutes). The performance index is worth 5.1 (out of 7.9), and the graphics card is the weak point (followed by the hard drive).

       Speaking from a consumer point of view, a laptop is enough for a full-fledged work - starting from fussing with text and Internet content, ending with editors such as Photoshop. HD movies went right up to 1080p without any problems (while the processor load will be only about 10%). You can also play - in many modern games ... but, of course, not at maximum settings.

    imageBattery life is about 3-3.5 hours.

    image Control weighing

         +Stylish matte (inside) case;
         +Convenient keyboard and touchpad;
         +High performance;
         +The presence of a drive and an HDMI connector;
         -Glossy cover (though almost not easily soiled) and screen frame (easily soiled);
         -There was no ExpressGate technology;
         -Fairly high price.

       As for the second minus, perhaps some do not know what it is about. And we are talking about the wonderful technology ASUS ExpressGate , which is a small operating system that runs on laptops in 7-8 seconds after launch. It implements many functions - a file manager, a player, full Skype and Firefox, an IM client for several protocols (including ICQ and GTalk) - it was strange not to see this chip on a new device.

    imageThere are two versions of the ASUS K52Jr laptop model on sale - with a Core i3 350M processor and a Core i5 430M processor . The second, of course, is more interesting - it was about him that was discussed in this article. But the price for it starts from 29 thousand rubles, while for the "younger" version they ask from 26. Not the most anti-crisis offer, but it seems to me more than competitive. On the other hand, new products, but on a new platform, have never been cheap.

    image The end

       The new processors from Intel are uniquely good - efficient, thought out, compact and with moderate "appetite." At least, I was able to verify this by the example of another laptop and, perhaps, I'm even glad that there will only be more of them. It is also very nice to see that ASUS is able to work on the bugs - a stylish matte case in the continuation of the series is proof of this.

    image

       The laptop from the review is a good example of what a laptop should be. Convenient, practical, with all the necessary interfaces - exactly what many may need for everyday computer activities. The only thing left from the sediment is a rather high price, comparable with no less attractive devices from the UL-series. Although for some reason I always thought that the “K” series from ASUS is a budget one.

    Sorry about the helicopter so little. Good luck!
