Heroes of Might and Magic on Symbian 9

    Once upon a time in a distant, faraway galaxy, a disc of Heroes III Erethia’s Resurrection has passed from someone to me. In those days (or rather nights) I was sitting on my pants, creating armies and crushing demons. Then, buying Asus Eee 900, installing ubuntu, I lured the same heroes there too. But this was not enough. I wanted very portable heroes that can be played even in the subway, even in pairs, or elsewhere.
    And it happened! Buying a Nokia E51 phone - searching the Internet - throwing stupid clones into the furnace - and here it is - Age Of Magic (the smartest Heroes Of Might & Magic clone on Symbian 9).
    I followed the project for a long time (it is still under development), but now, after the release of version 0.08, it has become very much like its ancestor.

    What was promised to us

    “The World of Age of Magic is a world of fairy tales and legends. It is inhabited by elves, dwarves, and other fabulous creatures. Heroes travel the world in search of treasure and glory.
    Magic is the cornerstone in the world of AoM. In total there are 6 schools of magic: earth, water, fire, air, light and darkness. Moreover, it is impossible to study two schools of opposite directions, for example, knowing the magic of darkness, the magic of light will be inaccessible. Each race initially has the ability to a particular school of magic. So for people it is water, for elves it is light, for necromancers it is darkness, for barbarians it is fire, etc.
    Spells can be acquired in magical guilds in cities or in magic towers found on the map. In total, there are 5 levels of spells, the higher the level, the higher the effect, the higher the cost and the higher the requirements for studying them.
    There are 6 types of resources in the game - this is stone, wood, mercury, sulfur, magic crystals and gold. Each of the resources is mined in strictly defined places.
    Gather resources, build cities, learn magic, hire an army. Here is the basic strategy of the game. A well-trained hero with a large army is a serious bid to win! ”

    What did they actually give us?

    Initially (i.e., in version 0.07), the game embodied the general concepts of the game: moving around a map, collecting resources, building buildings, hiring troops, and more.

    The game coped with these functions with a bang. Of course, there was no animation and the sounds are quite simple, but for a mobile port this is quite normal. The situation was worse with the battles.
    Firstly, the division of the battlefield into small squares, and not into hexagons that everyone liked, was not happy. But this is not the worst. It was impossible to use spells in battle! That is, you can build a guild of magicians in the city, but you can’t use it. And this is in a game called Age of Magic . Thus, the hero has to rely only on the army, but on the talents gained.

    Also, the following glitches were observed from software glitches: periodic loss of character, crash from the game when minimizing, loss of music, weak AI (although admittedly pretty fast).
    Periodically going to the forum, I read about the progress on creating version 0.08, and then left for 2 weeks. And when he returned, he found a fresh version and was glad. But only at that happy moment I already used Nokia 5530 to the full, therefore I had to dig up the shabby e51 and try on it.

    So what does the game present now

    The main thing that I want to note is, of course, the implementation of spells: a guild of magicians, a book of spells, and, of course, their use in battle. Only 36 spells.

    Each sang is provided with a description, in general, pleased. Also added personal perks to characters, added new objects and secondary skills.
    Further, the hexagons finally returned, which brought the game closer to the Heroes by a few more steps.

    There was an underground race, castles and other paraphernalia.
    What is still very pleased is the animation. And both while viewing the map, and during the battle. For the mobile port is very, very strong.
    The AI ​​pretty well pulled up, translated into English and Ukrainian, and for maps it is possible to localize as many as 30 languages. Plus added "Full native support for 352x416 screens."
    At the same time, I want to note that the game's performance is at its best: there were no brakes at all.

    It is also impossible to get past the map editor. I myself, unfortunately, did not use it, however, according to reviews on the forum, the audience was quite appreciative.

    What is very frustrating is the absolute lack of playability on 5800-like devices. According to the creator of the game (the only one, by the way!), Theoretically such a port is possible, but for this it is necessary to raise money for him to buy a phone with symbian s60v5. However:
