IDC: Android will supplant iPhones in a few years
Yesterday, IDC published a forecast for the development of the global mobile phone market until 2013 (Worldwide Mobile OS 2009-2013 Forecast and Analysis). According to analysts, the main trends here will be a change in the generation of the OS and the onset of Android.
The old generation (BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile) is being replaced by new powerful platforms based on open standards (Android) and intuitive design and navigation (Mac OS X and webOS). However, for such a short time, the leader (Symbian) cannot be shaken, because Nokia's position is too strong.
According to the forecast, the Android operating system will come in second place. Starting with a tiny amount of sales of 690 thousand in 2008, devices on this platform will sell 68 million units by 2013: over five years, growth is 98 times, that is, 150% annually. Four years later, Android will capture 17% of the global market and overtake Mac OS (iPhone). By the way, Gartner analysts announced the same forecast earlier.
Overall, the IDC forecast is very optimistic. The market for mobile phones and smartphones should grow by an average of 20.9% per year. By 2013, sales will grow to 391 million units.
