Niche social projects or thematic groups in large social networks

A social network with the ability to find "friends" by any signs, exchange messages, pictures, videos, etc. can be called a system thing, i.e. the basic idea of this type of human communication.
To produce projects containing only a basic idea is fashionable, but as a result it is not effective, because people have no reason to register everywhere and again find friends already found earlier in another place. Even if this happens, the user eventually inclines to one network, minimizing his activity in others. As a result, we have a number of large recognized projects.

We will not take into account the “everyday” attributes of the search, such as a university, school, place of work, etc. Let us look at the search and association of people based on mutual interests — professional, domestic, and whatever. If programmers, there are culinary specialists, there are collectors of rubber ducks, there are music lovers - who just aren't there.

What will a person, driven by interest or hobby, do - go to a small thematic project or join the thematic group of a large project?

Is it enough for people to find a new / old friend in the social network, knowing his interests? Are these basic capabilities of any social network enough for communication?

In terms of maintaining one contact list of friends, a large number of new potential friends, etc. one large project is more convenient to use. But there is a lack of functionality, taking into account the specifics of interests. Collectors of stamps will be interested in their own catalog for images, additional options for images, a small exchanger or flea market. For programmers - a library of code with the correct display, etc. And if the programmer and collector are the same person and his friends too, then, finding the missing functionality in different projects, users are “torn”.

I note that this is not about highly professional hobbies in a deep form, but about amateur interests of "moderate severity".

Thus, it is possible to develop thematic groups of social networks through applications. Only FB applications are a cloud, but in most cases they cannot be called oriented to satisfy all the needs of a group of users with one common interest.
There is reason to believe that this approach will cause more interest from users than the emergence of new middle-hand projects.

When designing a new startup, in my opinion, it is worth thinking about an alternative way to implement it, which, however, may not exclude the existence of a main project with a serious study of thematic functionality.
