What are you doing?
I was prompted to write this story by periodically reading comments by me, such as, “What kind of service name does Yota have such a stupid thing?” Yap-Yap ! "
So, I honestly admit, I personally came up with the name Jap :)
The story began in the month of February, when we started making a synchronization service for mobile phones and developing a future corporate website.
Immediately the question arose about the domain for the company. The problem was that the yota.ru domain was occupied by seo-squatters. These squatters did not respond in any way to the letters sent to the contact email and even had to ask friends to give the contacts of these guys. By the way, LJ worked perfectly: a couple of hours after fastingI received a letter with the business question "what is needed?" The letter was sent to the authorities and long negotiations began on the purchase of the domain. (nobody knew about the company and what it would do then, so looking ahead, the domain was bought relatively cheaply;)
In the meantime, the service was being written. In addition to synchronization, it has already begun to grow fat: with mobilophotes, sociality, and other dvuli. There was a real need to somehow call him. Negotiations on the yota.ru domain were still underway and decided to come up with a name from scratch. It’s important that it meets the following criteria:
1. in the .ru zone, a domain with the service
name must be free 2. the name must “shoot”: be instantly remembered
3. The name of the service must meet the requirement “as it is heard - it is spelled” with a minimum set of transliteration errors when translating from Russian-language spelling to the Latin-symbol
Brainstorming for two weeks. New names were constantly being offered, and casting was carried out within the team. Friends were also attracted. Were tried and “non-contact” names (vsvyazi), and “technological” (synchronizate), and Englishism (sync-me), and even all kinds of startup-name generators.
I did not like absolutely nothing. At some point, a sound combination occurred to me - “Yap-Yap!”.
Phonetically, the name is very light, it is transcribed uniquely in RuNet (thank you, Yahu and Yandex!), Its mnemonics is built on the double repetition of a simple three-sound syllable. Such a name is not remembered, it is driven in like a rusty nail into the head!
"-Here it is!" I thought. A small survey of acquaintances on ICQ, Skype, and also in blogs , and voila! - register a domain. True, it still took some time to convince the team members that the name is “the very thing” for the fun and useful service that we planned to do. Technological demos with a new name inside the company went off with a bang, and the name stuck. By the way, the Koreans really liked the phrase "YapYap", once they even especially highlighted this moment in the negotiations :)
In the meantime, we bought the yota.ru domain, and we began to create a corporate website. The idea was voiced to combine all our services - a corporate website, Iota-music and Music under the same roof * .yota.ru, and also apply a unified design to them.
We refused to launch with the yap-yap.ru domain, and the design got rid of funky motifs, became serious, became stricter and more like a head site. It’s possible that at this moment, for marketing reasons, it was necessary to abandon the name that already became all your family name and leave it with the internal name of the project, and start the service with an anonymous domain like myphone.yota.ru ... But we did not find the strength to part in a cheerful, good-natured Yap and presented in November it is just that :)
What we have now in the bottom line: the service is actively developing, more and more people are using it to transfer contacts and upload mobile photos. And the name ... By the nature of my side activities, I often have to communicate with “serious people” using a couple of phones to create a mobile mini-office. Yes, and seeing the owner of Max4G or iotamodem on the street, I do not hesitate to go up and ask what they think about the company, about the phone, about the services. Naturally, one of the questions is “how do you perceive JaPN?” And, it should be noted that people who use contact synchronization very rarely say “yes, the name is kind of stupid!”
