Social Design is the development of community rules and default choices that motivate participants' desired behavior. Successful social architecture has become one of the decisive success factors for many projects: Wikipedia, Digg, Yahoo! Answers, Yahoo! Personals, Stumble Upon, del.icio.us, Facebook, Slashdot.org, Reader2.com, Eventful.com, Yelp.com, VKontakte.ru, News2.ru, Habr.ru, Yandex Blogs, Imhonet.Ru.

What are the components of social design?
    • Rules for admission to the system. The system of attracting new users and retaining existing ones.
    • Motivation system. Psychological “winnings” and “rewards”. Business functions that the community takes on. Rules for determining reputation. The consequences of high and low reputation values.
    • Business model. Paid / free participation and individual functions. Earning opportunities for participants. Availability and type of advertising.
    • Privacy The level of anonymity of the participants. Access levels and their management system. Openness of the community to the outside world. The right to contact. Definition of spam, user protection tools.
    • Informational dynamics. Rules governing the promotion and dissemination of information in the community.
    • Self-organization. The boundaries of the activity of an individual participant, his “territory”.
    • System of restrictions. Maximum permissible parameter values (number of invitations, contacts, interests).

    Question
Now the main tasks (web search, advertising targeting, recommending systems) are solved mainly by machine learning. Huge collections of data are collected, the correct answers are determined on some of them, then the automatic search for the “magic formula” that describes the general pattern follows.

Can the same tasks be solved by means of social design? And if so, how to motivate users to create information that makes development of search engines, advertising systems and recommending systems as easy as possible?
