Review Roverbook Pro P535 Notebook

    Some 10-15 years ago, the laptop was something so special ... and by its presence it was possible to adequately judge the solvency of the owner. Now, in our difficult times) you will hardly surprise anyone with a laptop.
    About the hero you have already told, now tell about the heroine ”) So. The protagonist of today's review was a laptop from an allegedly Russian company, due to which, apparently, it is becoming even more interesting)

    image

    Yes, a hidden camera just shot your face :)
    Overview, traffic.

    I’ll make a reservation right away - I don’t know what exactly Rover Computers does in Russiaand for some reason I’m sure that they don’t have their own production in Russia. All the components, in theory, are from distant Taiwan and neighboring cities, which today you will not surprise anyone either. By the way, it's time to come to terms with this for a long time - close your eyes to Chinese stereotypes. Then, probably, only the assembly in Russia?
    Be that as it may, this is the second laptop of this company ( I wrote about the P735 about a year ago), and I am ready to share my experience with this model with everyone.

    About the laptop.

    The laptop is positioned by the manufacturer as a "multimedia center", however, looking at the configuration, we can say that some modern toys will go on the laptop. Speaking of configuration, I mean processor Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 with a frequency of 2.4 GHz (frequency of the system bus - 1066 MHz, L2-cache 3 MB), running on chipset Intel PM45 ; on board - 4 gigabytes ( 4096 MB ) of operational DDR2 memory and 512 MB on a video card, which is the nVidia GeForce 9600M GT; 320GB on your hard drive (Fujitsu MHZ2320BH G1, 5400rpm). The fact that the laptop will be a worthy guide to the world of entertainment says a lot - all kinds of connectors (VGA, S-Video, HDMI, IEEE1394, card reader and PCI Express slot), built-in DVD-RW drive, built-in TV tuner, multimedia panel and additional buttons, as well as an HD screen and control panel. Perhaps, it would also be possible to include here such a point as “price / quality ratio” - if quality does not disappoint) Indeed, the price, for such a system, figures “from 32,000 rubles”, which is very interesting. In general, let's see what it is there and how. Oh yes - all this with the Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) sauce .

    Equipment

    The box is large enough, but this is due to the fact that inside the device with a large diagonal. The box is a “suitcase” that can be conveniently disassembled (but it will not work for continuous use) - it is strange that no one has used such a layout before. It is one thing - when the box is immediately thrown out, another - when for some time you can walk around with a small “case” (until the purchase of something more suitable) - but this is an additional self-promotion) Well, attract attention, respectively.

    image

    So, I open it. Inside:
    - Laptop Roverbook Pro P535 ;
    - Remote control;
    - External antenna;
    - Network cable and AC adapter;
    - Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit + Quick Start Guide;
    - The manual for the laptop;
    - Book with service centers, a booklet on system recovery;
    - Warranty card, thanks from the president of the company;)
    - Two disks, one of which with drivers;
    - The data sheet of the device.

    image

    What I want to say about this) there are a lot of pieces of paper and this is good. Yes, someone does not need them and someone immediately throws them out, but those who want to find answers to their questions can easily do this. The laptop manual is black-and-white and in our native language - it contains everything that is needed and even more; there is even a glossary of terms) Technical passport ... to be honest, I forgot where I last saw a similar document on devices; it briefly and clearly contains all the information about the configuration, elements of the laptop, production date, etc.
    A disk with an operating system is also often forgotten by many manufacturers to put in a kit - they usually make a partition on the drive for recovery, which is somewhat different. There is also a full-fledged Windows (on the disk - Vista Home Premium 64bit, although on a Vista Home Premium 32bit laptop). On the second disk there are drivers for WinXP / Vista and some software.

    Appearance

    In order. The dimensions of the device (in mm) are 365x280x24, and the weight is 2.7 kg with a battery.
    The front cover is made of plastic, you can’t say its exact color - it’s either a green tint or purple; more of course purple. This color is called "Chameleon Metallic" and at first it seems very cool, but later I personally began to attract attention when it was not required at all. There are no complaints about the painting itself - at least something fresh, not boring) Also, a large company logo is applied on the lid.

    image

    If you look at the device on the right side, we will see: two connectors for connecting a microphone and headphones; one USB (2.0) port, DVD drive cover; a connector for a television antenna and two more USB ports. The latter are located one above the other, which excludes the possibility of simultaneously inserting two “thick” flash drives of the Transcend JetFlash type :( on the

    image

    left side there is a lock slot, VGA port, TV-out connector (S-Video), one HDMI port; telephone ( RJ-11) and a gigabit network (RJ-45) connectors; one USB port and IEEE1394 (FireWire) next to it; card reader (on MS-Pro, SD-SDHC, MMC and XD) and a PCI slot for ExpressCard. Where two modules for wireless communications, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, hid deep inside.

    image

    On the back side, apart from the ventilation hole and the connector for connecting power from the adapter, there is nothing.
    On the "belly" of the device is a pair of ventilation holes, speaker slots, the so-called subwoofer, batteries and latches, covers with screws that hide the filling of the laptop.
    How many times have we men, ladies, scolded us for not lifting the lid ... okay, let's raise it, just asking :) By the way, it opens about 160 degrees.

    image

    Now we have a large screen (15.4 ”, WXGA 1680x1050, R-Bright coating), above it - a 1.3Mp camera, on the sides of which there are two built-in microphones.

    image

    The screen itself is matte, but the frame around it is the same iridescent plastic, which again distracts. Below the logo, the articulated device is the most common.

    image

    On the second part of the “book” at the top right is the power button of the device, on the left - 5 chrome buttons (launch Mobile Utility, IE, volume control and mute).
    Below is a standard keyboard, without a digital part (which is strange - it seems like sizes allow).
    Under the keyboard are two touch-sensitive zones - a touchpad and a multimedia panel. I’ll tell you everything later, for now, just a description of the appearance.
    On the touchpad (with the scroll area), there are two buttons between which there is a fingerprint scanner.

    image

    Well and the last - at the very bottom of the device there are 8 indicators (for all occasions) and an infrared port (for remote control).
    The multimedia circle, located under the main keyboard, is a collection of 9 buttons. In the center there is a round “OK”, around which there are 4 buttons for controlling music and video (play / stop / prev / next). Well, the outer ring also consists of 4 buttons - favorites, music, video and TV.

    image

    Keyboard

    The size of the buttons is standard, their stroke is about 2mm. Russian is yellow-green, English is white. There is no digital keyboard, as I said. The layout is very convenient (some inconvenience is caused by a small left Shift and Fn / CTRL swapped places) - for some time I got used to quickly type on it. It is printed very quietly. Combinations of some keys with the “Fn” button duplicate some of the buttons that are located on the left under the monitor and in the multimedia panel.

    Touchpad

    It is from Synaptics , quite large and pleasant to the touch, the buttons are pressed very quietly, but with a lot of effort. Not multi-touch. Between the touch panel and the buttons there is a small embossed plastic barrier, which sometimes interferes with active work. On the right side of the touchpad is a zone for vertical scrolling. Between the buttons is a fingerprint scanner.

    image

    Remote controller

    Included with the laptop comes a pretty useful thing - a remote control. It is very thin (thinner than a centimeter), it uses a “tablet” battery to power it. I can’t say that it is surprising in its design, however, in many other laptops it is not at all) The instructions say that it is not recommended to deviate the remote control by more than 30 degrees from the normal to the receiver, however, the signal is caught in almost all directions.

    image

    By clicking the Start button, you can enter the MCE (Media Center Edition) shell , which will allow you to relax comfortably on the couch and continue working with the multimedia capabilities of the laptop - viewing photos, music, videos. Very interesting and functional detail)

    image

    Inclusion and work

    I turn on - first you hear the hum of coolers, which almost immediately noticeably subside. The operation indicator is on, which, for some reason, is duplicated on the panel at the touchpad. With a small load, the laptop works quite quietly, but noticeably; under load, additional ventilation will be activated and the noise from work increases, but again, it is not critical. The most noisy in the system is the disk drive, but this is the case everywhere.

    image

    The operating system boots fast enough. It's nice when there are not a dozen or two shortcuts of pre-installed unnecessary software on the desktop - of the available shortcuts there is only a basket and something BisonCap . Something is an application for working with the built-in camera. By the way, it is 1.3mpix and produces a very good image (I compare it with what I tested ).
    Here, by the way, what was noticed ... the company logo is almost everywhere - on the cover, on the front panel, in BIOS, when loading ... but it does not pay much attention to all this. But on the desktop, which, it would seem, is looked at more often / more / longer - a photograph of nature. I wonder who was guided by what?

    Initially, the fingerprint scanner does not work - you need to install software from the supplied disk. Everything rises without problems and after a reboot you can use it. The fingerprint scanner recognizes well enough (software - OmniPass ) even with a quick movement of the finger. In addition to the drivers, there is a bit of software on the disk - Acrobat Reader 5.0 Eng (?!); StrongDiskPro with a key is a fairly advanced program for data protection. I immediately disabled Norton Internet Security.
    The console is from the very beginning ready for hostilities.

    Performance

    Several synthetic tests were carried out, the rest was just work in "combat conditions". If the "parrots" say something, then here are their numbers (with the default values of the system; you can optimize a lot):
    PCMark'05 - 3924 (world record - 24760);
    3DMark'05 - 9850;
    SuperPi (1M) - 30 seconds;
    CPUFreeBenchMark 2.2 - 41.78 seconds;

    Tests on the Internet say 55+ FPS in UT3 (1280 × 1024) and 35+ FPS in Crysis (1280 × 1024, Medium Details).

    Working hours

    The device has a 6-cell lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 4400mAh, which (according to BatteryEater ) lasts for 200 minutes in economy mode and a little more than 120 minutes in high performance mode. Well, 3 hours for such a voracious system is very good! I looked at the filmman before going to bed, went to the Internet to scroll through the news and check the mail, wished everyone good night in ICQ, wrote down a to-do list for tomorrow and put it on charge with a clear conscience)

    Pros and cons

    Pros :
    - Good equipment; genuine Windows on a separate drive;
    - Remote control; MCE shell
    - Good build;
    - Good performance;

    Cons :
    - Impractical arrangement of USB ports;
    - Glossy body with iridescent color; case on the "latch";
    - Unjustified duplication of some buttons and indicators;
    - Somewhat noisy work, heating the touchpad under heavy load;
    - "Pressed" touchpad - dust will accumulate in the corners.

    conclusions

    A very common mistake of those who buy a laptop - too high expectations. This is even more noticeable in a crisis ... someone, having spent 20,000 on a laptop, believes that he can play on it for a couple of years, watch movies and check email on wi-fi. Oh, if everything was so good ... now 20,000 is already more of a price bar for netbooks than for full-fledged laptops ... so my opinion is when someone asks me to pick up a laptop - good laptops start at 25-30 thousand.
    This laptop costs 32 thousand. How much is it for an “adult” video card, 4GB of RAM and a decent assortment of various features listed at the very beginning of the article - everyone decides for himself) But I think this is a very reasonable price for such a device.
    Despite its gaming capabilities, the laptop, IMHO, is still more sharpened for multimedia tasks - it copes with them excellently. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will have to carry the laptop with you all the time, so you can close your eyes to the question of weight (2.7kg) and working time (2-3 hours). So, to buy this laptop a person, to be satisfied with the purchase, will only have to come to terms with the unusual color of the laptop - after this happens, there will be mutual lyuboff and harmony :)

    Success!
