Gnome 3.0 through the eyes of the user

    If you periodically read news and blogs devoted to GNU / Linux, you probably already heard that today Gnome developers decided to work closely on developing detailed plans for a major release of the Gnome 3.0 desktop environment (Gnome 2.30).
    If you still missed this news, I’ll remind you: it is assumed that work on the new main release will be carried out in three main areas:

    * Changing the user interface and working tools.
    * Platform upgrade. The transition to Gtk + 3, in which the program and binary interfaces (API / ABI) will be significantly changed, some subsystems have been redesigned, and obsolete code has been removed.
    * Popularization of GNOME.

    However, I would like to elaborate on two new technologies expected in Gnome 3.0 and intended specifically for the end user, which can completely change the approach to building a workspace.

    The first of these is Gnome Shell - replacing the familiar launcher and window manager. The essence of Gnome Shell is to simplify parallel work with several workspaces (virtual tables) even more, which can bring developers' old dreams about a task-oriented work environment of the user (programs, documents, contacts in IM will be selected depending on what are you working on right now). If you try to describe what Gnome Shell is now, you can say that it is a mixture of Gnome Panel, Compiz, and the start menu used in openSUSE. However, do not forget that the project is still in early development, however it will be already optionally available in Gnome 2.28.

    The second novelty that awaits us in Gnome 3.0 is a new document display format, based not on the file system hierarchy, but on all kinds of information about files, such as data type, location, creation time, names, labels, comments, etc. It is worth saying that such a file manager was already being developed quite a while ago - it was Codename Nemo , which instead of orientation by the file structure also allowed viewing files by the date they were created and modified (the project unfortunately died).
