GPS in Nokia 5800 XM

In this article, I would like to tell you about the work of gps in the Nokia 5800 smartphone. I was prompted by the post on iPhone navigation . There was a desire to compare the work of gps in these devices, as well as to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the navigator in 5800.

Our path totaled 80 km. Not much, but enough to feel both good sides and not so good. I used only the built-in program Nokia Maps, in which, as it turned out, there is no ordinary map of my region, but there is a very detailed map of, say, Poland. I had to download a satellite map weighing about 10 megabytes. The map was being downloaded as we progressed, rather quickly. Naturally, it was stored in memory, and when I restarted it, I didn’t have to download anything else. The first part of the path I followed the accuracy of positioning on the map. A regular card, not satellite, is already installed, you do not need to download it additionally. It is pretty good, but, as I said, in the regions it is impossible to navigate it.

The second is 40 km. I devoted to observing the indicators issued by another program, also supplied with the phone. With its help, you can track the speed of movement, coordinates at the moment, path, travel time, average speed, some strange indicator "height". Yes, and it also has a compass :) I
must say that the device found satellites quite quickly, lost contact only a couple of times.

What is good in the Nokia 5800 GPS navigator:

    • Good positioning accuracy. Indeed, the phone shows exactly the place in which we are.
    • Fast start. The phone finds satellites in literally 20-30 seconds.
    • Convenient built-in program with maps. Nice and simple interface, the ability to take pictures of the map.
    • Low battery drain.
    • Support aGps and Bluetooth GPS.
    • You can mark objects on the map, enter a detailed description for them, and lay a path to them.

What's wrong with the Nokia 5800 GPS navigator:

    • There are no detailed maps of many cities.
    • The need to download satellite images if there is no regular map.
    • Sometimes it loses connection with the satellite.
    • The odometer flies when you exit the program.
    • There is no search for objects, only for cities and streets.

As you can see, the navigator is not perfect. But still, do not forget that this is primarily a mobile phone. In large cities, using the built-in gps, you can successfully navigate, do not get lost and do not get lost, but in the regions - only a satellite card that wants money (albeit one-time), and it’s inconvenient to drive it.
A good GPS navigator on your phone is real! Good, but not perfect.
