Instructions: delete personal data from iPhone

How do you like this situation: after the release of the new iPhone 3G, you sell the old device (after doing restoration in iTunes to delete all the data), and after a while your personal photos, data from the correspondence, account passwords and etc.?

It turns out that there is the following problem - when restoring a new firmware via iTunes, the user's personal data is not overwritten and it will not be difficult for any owner of the necessary software to restore it.

A story is known when an Oregon police officer restored a file, letters, etc., that belonged to the previous owner from a refurbished iPhone (I recall that refurbished is the so-called restored technique, i.e. the user hands over the defective laptop / PDA / phone , it is repaired and sold at a discount)

Actually, there is no absolutely adequate solution yet - there is only the opportunity to minimize such a development of events:

    1. Launch iTunes and make a firmware restore (“Restore”).
    2. On the “Information” tab, uncheck “Synchronize contacts ...”, the same for calendars, mail, bookmarks.
    3. On the tabs "Photos", "Podcasts", "Video" - we do the same. Although interesting podcasts can be left))
    4. Create 3 big playlists with music (or video) - at least the same as the capacity of your iPhone? better - a little more.
    5. On the “Music” tab, select the first of the playlists for synchronization. We make sure that the “Capacity” indicator at the bottom of the screen is 100% full.
    6. Press the “Sync.” Button, then select the next playlist and synchronize again, then the third.

This technique can obviously help erase traces of data. Although the data is stored separately from music / video, the size of the logical drives on the iPhone is dynamically changing, so there is a good chance that all data marked for deletion will be erased.

Honestly, it’s not possible to verify the methodology (I’m not going to change the iPhone yet) - so we are waiting for feedback.

The methodology was suggested by rmogull , the original can be read securosis.com/2008/05/20/formatting-an-iphone-to-wipe-data "title =" / "Formatting /" An iPhone To Wipe Data "> here.
