Flash memory for entry-level phones

The company Spansion , one of the largest manufacturers of flash memory, today announced the immediate availability of a new "line" of products called NOR VS. This flash memory is specifically targeted at OEMs who design and manufacture mobile phones for countries with a rapidly growing market for such technology. Russia, by the way, also fell into this list. Along with China, India and other "rapidly developing" countries.

By entry-level phones, Spansion quite logically means the basic models of various manufacturers. These are devices that have either only voice communication functions (ringing, okay) or equipped with cheap modules, such as low-resolution digital cameras, average lousy displays, etc. In general, we mean absolutely inexpensive phones. Cheap phones, respectively, cheap memory. Reducing the cost of Spansion NOR VS, which includes products with a density of 16 Mbit to 64 Mbit, is made possible by a 30% reduction in crystal area. Thus, OEMs can save a lot on flash memory and create devices with a lower price, but at the same time with a large amount of “brains” on board.

One of the main advantages of NOR VS is its compatibility with existing solutions in the field of interfaces, chipsets, layouts and commands. The technical characteristics of this flash memory are as follows: support for the frequency of 104 MHz and operation at a supply voltage of 1.8 V.

Spansion plans to begin mass production of NOR VS at the end of this year.
