At the beginning of 2007, NIKKO Home Electronics announced the release of multi-functional robots made in the form of the legendary R2D2.

R2-D2 DVD Projector is equipped with a card reader and DVD / CD / MP3 player. It also has an FM radio, 20W speakers, an iPod jack, many different outputs for connecting to an external TV, LCD panel, speakers, etc. This robot is 20 inches tall.

The eye of the robot acts as a projector. He still does not know how to display holographic images, but on the screen with a diagonal of 80 inches with a resolution of 800x600 pixels it displays well.

The R2D2 robot is able to perform not only the functions necessary for the media center, but also move, deftly avoiding obstacles, and even talk a little.

One more miracle operates this robot - the panel in the form of Millennium Falcon. In addition to the design, this remote is remarkable in that it makes the sounds of a starship engine.

Nikko's R2D2 is expected to go on sale in Europe in August. Estimated price - $ 2500.

A smaller and simplified version is also expected - the R2-D2 Skype Web Cam.

Instead of a projector and a DVD drive, this droid housed a webcam, and is controlled by the R2-D2 Skype Web Cam remote control in the form of an Anakin Skywalker lightsaber. Also, the sword can be used as a USB phone, and the robot can be controlled via the Internet. The R2-D2 Skype Web Cam can be used as a little spy or security guard. The height of this robot is only 20 cm. Such an R2D2 will cost about $ 500- $ 600.

Here is a video presentation of these robots on CEBIT and a couple of videos about R2-D2 DVD Projector.

In anticipation of this miracle of technology, Star Wars fans will not be bored. There are already several other implementations of this legendary robot.

First of all, this is “Voice Activated Deluxe 15 Inch R2-D2 Interactive Astromech Droid” from the company with the wonderful name Hasbro Hasbro's
    Habro r2d2

R2D2 adroitly moves on a flat surface, understands 40 commands, turns its head and demonstrates humility using its R2D2-language. Knows and responds to the names of the heroes of Star Wars. At the sound of "Darth Vader" loses his will. He has an infrared eye that detects the presence of a person in the room and a sound sounder that can calculate the distance to obstacles. He also knows how to play various games and whistles five tunes. HasbroR2D2 costs $ 199 and is sold for example in Amazon
