New gTLDs - Mid-2008

The first replenishment of the family of general domain zones (gTLDs) after 2000 may take place as early as next summer. ICANN has announced a public discussion on the process of creating new domain zones. What they will be will be decided by an open tender.

The previous replenishment of gTLDs took place in 2000. Then, ICANN approved seven new domain zones, but only two of them became relatively popular: these are .info and .biz. In 2004, new zones were added: regional and thematic, but not general purpose.

The procedure for the new gTLDs extension has not been clearly defined yet. For discussion, the scheme shown in the diagram below is proposed. The final scheme can be approved by the end of the year, and then applications for new gTLDs will begin to be accepted at the beginning of 2008. According to experts, consideration and approval of applications and the addition of new zones to the DNS system can be completed in June-August 2008. via
