Fungi hunting - a suspicious hobby

  • Tutorial
Tell the British that you love picking mushrooms and they won’t understand you. Why take chances when the shops have easy-to-understand mushrooms & truffles? Wild mushrooms both look and smell suspicious, and the one who eats them and walks alive is either an incredible lucky person or one who knows all the secrets - which is also, in general, suspicious.

Mushroom folklore and a survival test in the English forests will help understand the cautious British. Go!

"Toad chair" and other concepts

Mushrooms are farmed and wild, the latter are divided into poisonous and edible. Fungus (read “fangus”, plural fungi) is a clever name, mushroom is a popular name, and toadstool is a warning: sometimes it is something poisonous, and sometimes edible, but mimicking deadly doubles.

Toadstool (“toad chair” / “toad chair”) is an echo of medieval superstition: an edible mushroom becomes poisonous if a poisonous toad sits on it, and since it cannot be determined by eye, it is better not to take any. Everything is true about local toads: their skin really releases toxins. But about mushrooms - no: just some do not combine with alcohol, others cannot be eaten raw, and still others — with the taste of regular mushrooms or radishes — are killed only on the fourth day. But should someone become extreme?

“Eat me!” (C)

About 15,000 species of mushrooms live on the island, so there are few echoes with the continent. This is what the people-friendly top 5 looks like:

1. Black Truffle - Truffle. Rare. We love him because he has no false cousins.

2. White mushroom - aka Porcini (boletus), aka Cep (which is French), aka Penny Bun - a small penny bun that alludes to the “Bread Act” of 1266 - then the standard “loaf” appeared.

3. Morel present - Morel. The origin of the name is foggy, but it could not do without the French. He has a double, "Morel false" False Morel. The one that is poisonous in its raw form and is considered a delicacy in the countries of Scandinavia.

4. Champignon. What is sold in the store / served in the restaurant is Portobello Mushroom, a two-yard mushroom. And he is good because you can’t confuse him with anyone. Another thing is Field Mushroom or Horse Mushroom (also mushrooms, by the way). They look very much like the poisonous cousin, the Yellow Stainer, from whom they die every other time.

Hint: whoever smells of anise is friend and whoever is Indian ink is enemy.

5. Chanterelle summer - Chanterelle (Chantrel). The one that is served with sour cream. But there is also the Yellow Foot, or the Trumpet Chanterelle, the autumn-winter variation. Strange, albeit edible.

Special attention should be paid to the local attraction Giant Puffball - a gigantic raincoat. It grows the size of a pumpkin, and make steaks out of it. In the photo, by the way, is undergrowth :)

The Blue Stalk Mushroom (aka Wood Blewit) and the Russula hybrid with Caesar's Mushroom - Caesar's Mushroom are also good .

The latter is so good that enterprising Bulgarians sell it on amazon.co.uk as Wild Hand-Picked Gourmet Mushrooms (while writing psto, the goods ran out):

The sweeter the more dangerous

Some of the Assassin mushrooms migrated from the continent and successfully mowed down under the not-bad locals. Appearance does not give them away, and the names are also like: “Cobweb for a fool” Fool's Webcap (aka Panther Cap), “Smashing Angel” Destroying Angel and “Killer Hat” Death Cap. Learned? Amanita panther, fly agaric smelly and pale toadstool. Just in case, let me remind you that the antidotes to such toxins have not yet been discovered, and the victim's kidneys and liver fail for 10 days after long vomiting, diarrhea, and imaginary recovery.

They smell sweet and taste good - the Roman emperor Claudius really liked it.
Another visiting mercenary is the famous glucogrib."Mushroom mushroom" Fly agaric (fly agaric). In Britain, it is famous for the fact that in the Middle Ages a hat was crushed into milk to get rid of flies - they were poisoned, became lethargic and immediately drowned. It was believed that boiling kills his toxins, but where are these people now? Causes pulmonary edema and death from suffocation, therefore warning!

And here is the local guard - Sweating Mushroom (it will make you sweat endlessly!), Jack Lantern Jack O'lantern and Inky Cap. Jack Lantern mows everything under the chanterelle chanterelle, including taste and smell, and at the same time glows in the dark (!), While the fermented Hat was boiled in water with cloves and urine to get ink. There is something it is possible after heat treatment, but it is absolutely impossible to drink it with alcohol. Prohibition for 48 hours - otherwise goodbye, heart. For the second popular name for the mushroom is “Pianchuzhkin’s doom” by Tippler's Bane.

So, now you are ready for anything :) Let's start with!

Virtual Simulator: “What is this toadstool, sir?”

There are 5 edible mushrooms, 2 poisonous and 1 mushroom with a surprise. Gather friends, and let the enemies grow further. Mushrooms are cut off like this: write in the comment

On the third day I’ll tell you who survived and who irreversibly got sick ... And what it's called - too :) Go!
