California moves toward ODF
It is possible that in the near future the US state of California will adopt ODF (Open Document Format for XML) as the official format for documents and other paperwork, writes CNet . If the bill proposed by Mark Leno, a Democrat from San Francisco, is passed, then January 1, 2008, California will become an “open” state.
Earlier, the states of Texas and Minnesota announced a similar decision. On July 1, 2008, Minnesota will switch to the open format of documents, and Texas will pull up later on September 1 of that year.
The first ODF specifications were published in December 2006.
