Microsoft patents "modular operating system"

As part of the Anytime Upgrade service, which owners of the Windows Vista operating system can use, Microsoft is going to roll out a novelty - the so-called modular updates.

The innovation is very important (Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, said that the future of Windows will depend more on modular updates), so it is not surprising that the company decided to patent its invention.

The patent “System and method for delivery of a modular operating system” describes an operating system in which additional modules are used to extend functionality. The “core” of the modular update system is the license check module, which allows or prohibits the installation of other add-ons. The main advantage of the new approach is that it will take very little time to add functions to an existing OS.
