Stand-along communities versus social networking communities

Here I was thinking, looking, say, at Combi : why do we need to create a social network in order to form communities there later?

After all, the question immediately arises - where did the money come from? Adsense-like? For a Russian-speaking audience - doubtful. Of course, the Runner can talk about $ 1.5, but it’s a penny, and even these figures bother me ...

The only viable approach, IMHO, is to create a homogeneous community on a separate site based on the relationship to a certain subject area, and introduce an existing one (or create that is also an option) of a niche brand.

In this case, this approach, firstly - cheaper, and secondly - the content is controlled better than on social networks (why - this is a separate huge topic). Thirdly, there is such an effect - if the site is “only about this”, then it attracts more interest among the fans of “this” than the site, which is “about this too”. In general, time will certainly show, but logic is a great thing. :))
