Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14316 with Bash on Ubuntu is already available

    Microsoft quietly (after a loud notification of future changes) has posted Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14316 with integrated Ubuntu. As you know, a full-fledged major update of the Windows 10 operating system with native support for Bash on Ubuntu will be released in the summer. Now it will be possible to work with Linux-based applications on the command line from Windows 10, without starting the virtual machine.

    In order for specialists and ordinary users to try out the innovation in their work, the corporation laid out a new preview-build with native support for Bash on Ubuntu.

    Bash support here comes with some limitations. Namely - to work with the shell, you must enable Developer Mode in the Update & Security settings. Once the user has done this, you can call up the Windows command line, set up “bash”, and boot Ubuntu (this process is shown in the screenshot in the announcement).

    The company warns that this tool is intended for developers who would like to use Linux applications on the command line. If an ordinary user wants to launch a Linux desktop application with Bash, nothing will work. There is simply no GUI support for this OS.

    New Build 14316 also adds the following features:
    • Cortana becomes a cross-platform virtual assistant, warning of low battery, helping to find the phone, sending cards from the phone to the PC and doing other work. This is true for users working with Windows 10 PCs with Cortana and Windows 10 Mobile or Android devices with Cortana;
    • Edge Browser now supports additional extensions, including OneNote Clipper and Pin It Button;
    • In the presence of a preview version of the new Skype Universal Windows Platform;
    • New Emoji;
    • If desired, the user can switch between dark and light versions of the Windows theme, including settings, clock, calculator, etc .;
    • Phones that support the Continuum feature can now work with the Connect application to display a virtual desktop on a PC without using the Miracast or Microsoft Display Dock adapter.

    Naturally, it is worth remembering that this is only a preview, so there may be bugs, problems, and some functions will alter the release of the final release.
