The first 3D-printed office opened in Dubai

Dubai recently announced a strategy to build with 3D printers: authorities plan that by 2030, 25% of all buildings in this city will be printed. The first step was the opening of a printed office in the city center. It took 17 days and 140 thousand dollars to print parts and build a one-story building with an area of 250 square meters, which is two times cheaper than building a similar building using traditional methods.

To print the modules for the construction of the building, a printer was used with a height of two floors, a length of 36 meters and a width of 12 meters. The work of the machine followed by one person. After printing the modules, they were delivered to the construction site, where a team of 17 workers assembled the building and equipped it.

“Today we are announcing the opening of the world's first office printed on a 3D printer, less than a month after the launch of the 3D printing strategy in Dubai, which shows a modern construction model. We are showing this experience in introducing the future technology to the world, and it represents a new milestone in the UAE as a global leader in strategic achievements, ” said Sheikh Mohammed ibn Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai, at the opening of the office. “This project will be an example that will benefit regulators, as well as research and development centers at the regional and international levels in the application of 3D printing technology. We will document this experience and draw from it the most important lessons that will serve as reference points to take this technology to a new level. ”

According to Sheikh, the competitive advantages of 3D printing, namely low cost and high speed of delivery, will make the UAE one of the most important and sustainable economic centers, allowing you to effectively use the technology in the future.

The printed office is a single-storey building of complex shape with an area of 250 square meters. It has electricity, plumbing, telecommunications equipment, air conditioning system. This is a normal office, for the construction of which used printed with the help of a special composition of parts. The printer used a mixture of cement, reinforced plastic and glass fiber reinforced gypsum. These materials were tested in China and in the UK to test their reliability. The shape of the parts (arc can be seen in the video above) is due to the safety of people and the sustainability of the building.

The developers have taken a number of measures to improve the energy efficiency of the building in the Dubai climate.
