Scientists have debunked the myth of the stupidity of blondes
Researchers from Ohio State University have refuted the myth of the stupidity of blondes . After analyzing the questionnaires of 11,000 women, the scientists calculated that, within the statistical error of their IQ, it does not differ from the intelligence quotient of brunettes, brown-haired or redheads. Moreover, the IQ of blondes was on average slightly higher than that of the owners of the hair of other colors.
The stereotype of nearby blondes is easily explained from the point of view of male preferences, and a reasonable person will surely question his credibility even without statistical studies. However, this kind of prejudice affects real people in real life.
Because of this myth, it is more difficult for a blond man to get a job, integrate into a team and participate in a different kind of social activity. In a 1999 study, psychologists discovered that this stereotype is as strong today as it was 50 years ago, when it was promoted by such characters as the heroine Merlin Monroe.
In that study, young men and women, describing their view of a man, obtained from his photograph, on average described platinum blondes as less intelligent, brunettes as more shy, and blonde blondes as more popular. At the same time photographed women wore wigs.
For obvious reasons, representatives of the Negroid and Mexican races were excluded from the research in question. It turned out that the average IQ of blondes is 103.2. In brown-haired women, this figure is 102.7, in red, 101.2, and in brunettes, 100.5.
In addition, the probability of falling into the category of highly intelligent people in blondes was slightly higher than the rest, and in the category of low-intellectuals - slightly lower. Analysis of the forms of men with different hair color showed approximately similar results.
The author of the work, Jay Zagorsky, [Jay Zagorsky] commented on the result like this: “I don’t think that it is safe to say that blondes are smarter than others. But you can definitely say that they are not dumber. "
