Monkeys nibble on the Internet: animals destroy fiber optic cables in India

Indian authorities launched the $ 18 billion provincial Internet revolution plan and faced a problem in the form of monkeys: animals bite and tear fiber optic cables. Monkeys live in the temples of the city of Varanasi, which is 3,000 years old, and are sacred animals - this complicates the solution to the problem, reports Reuters .

“We cannot move the temples. We cannot modify anything, everything has already been built. Monkeys destroy all wires and eat all wires! ” - says engineer A.P. Shrivastava, who is responsible for the Internet in Varanasi.

Cable management runs along the banks of the Ganges. According to Srivastava, just two months after installing the cables, the monkeys chewed them so much that they had to be replaced. The team is looking for alternative ways, but in a densely populated city, where more than two million people live, engineers have no way to lay cables underground. On the other hand, they won’t be able to drive away monkeys, much less catch them - local residents and representatives of the religious community will be outraged by this behavior.

Not only monkeys interfere with equipping cities with network access: the problem is a shortage of electricity. Daily power outages can last several hours in Varanasi and in most of India. The government plans to lay 700 thousand kilometers of cable for broadband Internet access in 250,000 villages and build 100 new smart cities by 2020.
