Instant glue and soda: extra touches

About instant glue with soda, perhaps even more jokes have not been invented, but everyone is silent about one interesting feature. So, a mixture of cyanoacrylate with soda instantly polymerizes (hardens), generating heat and perfectly grasping molecular bonds with nearby layers. But not with anyone. With ABS plastic - good, but with polypropylene - bad. Well, so what? When stratified filling (or rather, "Zack and PKE") to follow the exact shape of the part is not easy. Many surpluses at the end have to be removed mechanically (with a file). What about “formwork” from the same materials at hand? Artisanal 3D printing from a pocket.

I somehow broke the armrest in the car. He was lying with me for six months, lying down (I thought I’ll print a new one, huh), until I came across a monitor repair with soda. Having estimated the cost of replacing the armrest (only together with the entire console), I decided to buy the instrument with this money. The "officials" would have been enough for a whole workshop, probably.

It is noteworthy that it was at this moment that I learned about BONDIC photo-curing glue , but more on that later.

    Formwork

We continue the associative series: instant glue, soda and ... ordinary adhesive tape. It is made of polypropylene, and cyanoacrylate ignores it. This means: do not peel off, just take off. Taking into account transparency and self-adhesiveness, an excellent formwork comes out of the usual “adhesive tape”, which gives the details a form even at the polymerization stage. As the part is poured in layers, the process resembles 3D printing in the steampunk genre (instead of water vapor - toxic fumes of cyanoacrylate). The tape is then easily removed, a little file to remove, and you're done! You can do repair and strange art (only in goggles and a respirator mask, perhaps).

Detail of the armrest of one of my cars. Thin hinges made of ABS plastic were broken “with meat”.
The main shape of the new hinges is attached to a transparent tape that can be easily removed.

Why else do you need instantness

It is with its instantness, as it seems to me, that the BONDIC mentioned above attracts. Human laziness and impatience are an excellent sales engine. Handheld 3D printer in your pocket.

But back to soda. I had to drill a thin hole in the depth of two lengths of the drill itself, and even using a purchased drill stand is not as easy as it sounds. Again I recall a joke about two tunnels . This is where the main property appears: the polymerization rate. Have you missed? It doesn’t matter, we carefully “dig” the hole back, adjust the drilling unit and drill in a new way, since everything hardens instantly. Not every material forgives mistakes so quickly and easily.

By the way, about the drill stand KWB Profi 7778-00. The backlash is really clean, a powerful cast rod, a new level of material processing at home, a delight! And the silumin bed, which spoils the effect :-) True, to drill my part, I had to borrow for a couple of days in a DIY supermarket such an add-on made of 5mm steel used to fix house beams (and you don’t need to drill holes):
    almost free add-on
    sorry for the quality

Once again about the storage of cyanoacrylate

How much CA glue disappears in vain from improper storage! Do not discard the desiccant bags (silica gel) found in some purchases. Put the tube with glue and silica gel in a transparent bag with a clasp (in which small parts they sell). Then put it all in the refrigerator, the buttoned bag with glue is also not so annoying to family members. Keep out of reach of children!

Then another crazy idea came to my mind: a hybrid chemical “ink-jet” 3D printerprinting cyanoacrylate with an aqueous solution of a slightly alkaline agent, with an FDM extruder for printing formwork made of polyethylene or polypropylene. Toxicoman holiday, in short.

    Problems

    • Print speed (unclear what).
    • Poisonous atmosphere a la "breaking bad".
    • The difficulty of storing consumables (a barrel of a cosmophene, they say, dries in 8 months).
    • Difficulty printing in a domestic environment (air is humid).
    • Billet heating (exothermic polymerization reaction).
    • Destruction of the part at 80..100 degrees Celsius.
    • Formwork delamination, shrinkage when cooling.

There are probably many more problems :)

    Benefits

    • Powerful adhesion of the part with the “table” of the printer.
    • B of lshie dimensions of print products.
    • Products of complex shape, with easily detachable formwork.
    • The relative availability of consumables.

Absurd? Yes, I can only fix the armrests :-)
