Changes at Geektimes. Main page

    Hi geeks!

    Today we changed the layout of the Geektimes main page. Now all users, whether registered or guests, see one common publication stream. We decided to abandon the personalization (tapes) inherited from Habr and return the good old main page, from which Habr began back in 2006.

    Surely many of you remember the main page of "Habr". Every author wanted to get on it, for this it was necessary to place the publication in any hub (then a blog) and score at least 7 rating points. With the increasing popularity of the resource, the general main page, in which literally everything was brewing (from publications about development to publications on how to monitor health), became a headache not only for us, but also for users: it mixed different “layers of the population” ”, Which often turned into endless disputes and karmic wars.

    The introduction of the “feed” with the ability to personalize the home page allowed us to put people with different interests and views into different rooms. This step allowed us to solve many problems: the number of minuses decreased, users began to read only what they were interested in, the complaints “ tired of posts on topic X ” and endless discussions about what was wrong with “Habrahabr” disappeared .

    It is difficult to believe, but the transition from the "main" to the "tape" took place already in March 2011 - more than three years ago! During this time, "Habr" has grown to 10 million unique users per month, and you probably managed to get used to the personal tape and will now accept the innovation with some indignation.

    The Homepage will only be on the Gimetimes - and here's why. “Habr” is a purely professional community, where the division into “sects” is literally necessary because of the specificity of publications, while the materials on “Giktayms” are designed for a much wider audience. We don’t want you to follow only one area “by inertia” on a new project — we want you to broaden your horizons and learn something new every day.

    We expect that a return to the old main page will also have a beneficial effect on the following aspects:

    - An increase in the number of views of publications (and with it, other indicators), which will not hurt the new project. The “exit threshold” to the main one is +5.
    - Reducing the amount of indignation associated with the need to configure the tape on another project. Indeed - other hubs, new ones are created literally every week on the Giktayms - keeping track of all the changes is not easy even for those who live on the site.

    Other changes on Geektimes:

    - Increased font size of publications;
    - Thematic rubricator appeared in hubs ;
    - Added support for inserting tweets with a tag:

    - Added support for inserting video from YouTube with a time stamp;
    - The user profile has been slightly redesigned: instead of the unclaimed “Subscribers” tab, there are now three more important tabs: publications, comments and user favorites.
    - At the very top of each publication, the author’s nickname and his karma with a rating are displayed, for which you can vote immediately from the publication page. Do not be lazy to thank the authors if you liked their publications;

    - Changes in the subsections of the hubs: now there are “Publications” (Interesting and all in a row) and “Authors”.
    - Other minor fixes.

    This year we have a few more updates planned.
