Solar panel bike path

TNO, together with two other local firms, developed SolaRoad technology, which allows the road to turn solar energy into electrical energy. A trial section of a bicycle strip with a length of 70 m has already been laid in the city of Krommen, 25 km from Amsterdam. It consists of modules measuring 2.5 x 3.5 m. The solar panels are located under a centimeter layer of tempered glass that can withstand the weight of the truck.

By 2016, it is planned to bring the track length to 100 m. In its current state, it is capable of generating enough energy to meet the electricity demand of three houses. It is further assumed that such modular road surfaces will be able to provide energy to road lighting facilities and power electric bicycles and electric cars.

Over the next three years, specialists will evaluate the operational characteristics of the neglected section of the bicycle lane. Preliminary tests in the laboratory confirmed that such road modules comply with Dutch road safety standards.
