Earl - tablet for adventure lovers

It's amazing that Earl was hardly mentioned on GT and Habré - a truly indestructible six-inch tablet with everything you need for hiking and survival.

So, what is this device and how does it differ from the rest?
    Declared specifications:
    • Android 4.4
    • 6-inch backlit e-ink screen with a resolution of 1024x758
    • Capacitive touch with glove support
    • IP67 protection
    • Battery 3100 mAh (declared operating time 20 hours)
    • Built-in Solar Charge
    • Processor i.MX 6 DualLite 1GHz Cortex A9
    • 1GB RAM
    • 16GB ROM + MicroSD
    • WiFi b / g / n; Bluetooth 4.0 ANT +, NFC
    • Extremely accurate GPS, GLONASS and WAAS controller
    • Weather sensors (barometer, thermometer, hygrometer)
    • Radio transmitter ranges GMRS, PMR446, UHFCB 2W (yes, walkie-talkie in the tablet)
    • AM / FM / SW / LW / WB Broadband Receiver
    • Carabiner for fastening

As you can see, the list is rather big.

Let's start from the screen: it is obvious that it was not created for games and movies, but for cards and books - this explains the choice of e-ink. It is worth noting that you do not need to remove gloves to work with him.

One of the interesting features is solar charging: in addition to the already good performance for Android at 20 hours of operation, you can simply leave it in the sun or attach it to a backpack and forget about the need for charging. But the usual MicroUSB is still here.

The approach to communication here is different: it is calculated that the device will be used in areas without GSM coverage, and the usual 3G module has been replaced with a real portable radio station with a transmission power of 2W. Transmission is supported in the ranges PMR446 (446MHz), GMRS (462MHz), UHFCB (477MHz). Radio functions can be connected to a heart rate sensor, and Earl will be able to send an alarm when a sudden change in heart rate. The receiver supports the range 153–279 KHz, 520–1710 kHz, 2.3–21.85 MHz, 64–108 MHz, 162 MHz (weather SAME) and NOAA frequencies.

The navigation system is also interesting: in addition to offline maps and satellites, Earl can track your location when the signal is lost using the built-in sensors: magnetometer, accelerometer and gyroscope. This will help if you are in a zone of dense vegetation or have entered a building where you stopped picking GPS.

Earl raised $ 750'000 from the required $ 250'000 and was supposed to be wiped out this summer, but ran into certification problems, and an official release could be expected soon. The tablet will be available in two colors and card modifications.

    Price: $ 299 for the version with 100k cards and $ 349 for 100k + 24K.
