Western Digital Releases First 14 Terabyte HDD
Western Digital has developed an Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive with a capacity of 14 TB. Prior to this, the 12-terabyte Ultrastar He12 and Seagate Enterprise Capacity were considered the most capacious hard drives . What technologies the manufacturing company used, we will consider further. / Flickr / uwe hermann / CC
In order to achieve such a capacity and keep the performance high, WD applied two technologies: the so-called Shingled Magnetic Recording and HelioSeal - filling the device with helium.

To write more data to disk, the number of tracks on each plate increases . To fit more tracks on the plate, they are placed one above the other - like tiles on roofs. Hence the name.
But since the tracks seem to “overlap” each other, when making changes or overwriting the lower track, you have to adjust the information on the top. In order not to overwrite the entire plate every time, the tracks are combined into small groups (tapes), and rewriting occurs only within them.
A side effect of this architecture is reducedperformance. But Western Digital uses the second generation of technology, in which it was possible to smooth out the shortcomings - the sequential write speed of a disc is twice as high as that of its predecessor. According to the company, Ultrastar Hs14 offers a 16% increase in capacity while maintaining predictable, stable performance.
The hard drive is made in accordance with HelioSeal technology, that is, filled with helium. Compared to air, helium has less resistance, therefore such HDDs are lighter, more wear-resistant and energy-efficient (power consumption in standby mode is 60% less than that of 8-terabyte “air” models). They also heat less.
The fourth generation of HelioSeal, used in Ultrastar Hs14, allows you to more densely place disks and create HDDs, consisting of 8 "pancakes". The third generation only supported 7-disc design.
The Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive comes in two versions: with a SATA interface (6 Gb / s) and a SAS interface (12 Gb / s). Key features of the new HDD:
A full list of Ultrastar Hs14 specifications can be found on the official website .
The hard drive is positioned as a solution for BigData-storages, clouds, data centers of social networks and streaming services, as well as a storage device for backups and replications. Western Digital has already delivered Ultrastar Hs14 to some corporate customers with a 5-year warranty.

“Over 70% of the“ memory ”that Western Digital delivers to the corporate market is high-capacity helium HDDs,” said Mark Grace, vice president of Western Digital.
The Ultrastar Hs14 hard drive comes in two versions: with a SATA interface (6 Gb / s) and a SAS interface (12 Gb / s). Key features of the new HDD:
- Spindle rotation speed - 7200 rpm,
- 512 MB of buffer memory
- 1034 Gbps² recording density
- Latency 4.16 ms
- Search time 7.7 ms,
- MTBF of 2.5 million hours.
