Greenland programmer (creator of PHP): “I hate programming. But I love to solve problems. ”

Today is the birthday of the creator of PHP, Rasmus Lerdorf (Dat. Rasmus Lerdorf ). I want to bring to your attention a few facts from his biography and a couple of quotes in order to understand the train of thought and worldview of this "programmer."

In 1994, Rasmus wrote down a set of Perl / CGI scripts that process HTML document templates, which later became an interpreter of the PHP programming language, with which it was possible to solve various problems of web applications.

“That PHP that we know now is not at all what I did at the very beginning. Dozens, if not hundreds, of people took part in the development. I was just the first developer. ”

“PHP is like a toothbrush. You use it every day, she does her job, a simple tool. What do you want to know about toothbrushes? ”

Back at the university, Lerdorf developed graphical interfaces for all kinds of corporations. After graduation, he joined the Nutec Informática company, went under UNIX / DOS and participated in the development of the Nutec Desktop interface. In 1994, Lerdorf created a graphical interface for the Toronto Internet Service Provider. In the same year, Rasmus created his own company Lerdorf Consultants Inc.

“I wrote parsers very very poorly. I still write shitty parsers. ”

“There are people who like to program. I do not understand them."

“I'm not a real programmer. I just put together the things that worked. A real programmer would say: “It works, but there are memory leaks at every step. We need to fix it. “But I just restart Apache every 10 requests.”

In 1994, a script appeared on the net written by Lerdorf and titled “PHP-Tools for Personal Home Page”, which collected statistics about visits to a web page. It can be considered the beginning of the emergence of PHP. The script was open source and Rasmus Lerdorf collected user reviews, processed comments and errors, expanding and improving its own development.

“I don’t know how to stop, I never set out to write a programming language. I just took the next step based on logic. ”

“For those who write down my quotes: I’m a terrible coder, but most likely better than you :)”

“I never considered PHP to be more than just a tool for solving problems.”

From 2002 to 2009, Lerdorf worked at Yahoo! Inc. Being an ardent supporter of open source, Lerdorf keeps in touch with many PHP programmers, improving and modifying his own brainchild every day. He is also the author of more than fifteen books on the PHP language.

“PHP is very rarely the weakest link.”

“Ugly problems often require ugly solutions. It's an elegantly damn difficult solution to an ugly problem. ”

“PHP is a hammer. Nobody got rich in the production of hammers. ”

According to Ledorf, the first version of PHP was written literally in a day in between business meetings.

Rasmus actively speaks at open source conferences and advises startups.

    Happy Birthday to Rasmus Ledorf!
