Embarcadero Technologies sold to Idera
Judging by a number of explanations here , and discussion on the forums , Embarcadero Technologies, a manufacturer of application development tools and database developers (Delphi, InterBase, DBArtisan, etc.), was acquired by Idera , a company specializing in database tools. The amount of the transaction, based on the available data, is $ 425 million.
It is interesting to recall that in 2006-2007 Embarcadero Technologies itself was acquired by a private investment fund and removed from the listing (i.e. it was public, traded on the stock exchange, and became a closed, private company), then (in 2008-2009) Embarcadero acquired CodeGear developer tools (Delphi, C ++ Builder, InterBase) from Borland for $ 20 million And after 6 years, the sale for 425, i.e. approximately 4 times increased the cost.
A rather sad story is with these developer tools, which are still very popular both in our country and in a number of other countries. Once a company gains momentum and starts releasing a quality product (and recently, multi-platform development opportunities for mobile OSs, 64-bit versions and a lot of good things have appeared), they sell it to someone.
I just worked at Borland’s Russian representative office during the deal with Embarcadero, and I can say that ET was very well connected with the acquisition: the development teams were significantly strengthened, then the company was cross-licensed ( Fast Reports and others) and acquired several component libraries (FireMonkey etc.), which were then redesigned and made up the new backbone of the product, significantly increasing the number of Delphi user developers at the expense of those who develop mobile applications.
It is hard to say whether Idera will show the same gentlemanly approach to development tools as Embarcadero. Obviously, the deal, like in the sale of CodeGear, was influenced not only by sales figures (pretty good), but also by almost 3 million users of products such as Delphi, but it is not clear what strategy the new owner will follow.
In any case, a good sign is the amount of the transaction - there have not been such large acquisitions in a market oriented to developers and administrators for a long time.
I hope that Idera will become a good host of its new acquisitions.
UPDATE
Embarcadero and Idera, despite a heated discussion of the situation on the Internet, still remain silent about the deal, neither confirming nor refuting them. I must say that it was exactly the same with CodeGear, and when buying Together Software - silence until the last moment, even within the company.
According to rumors, the announcement will be on Thursday.
UPDATE 2
News on theregsiter.co.uk - confirm the transaction, but the amount is not called.
