Huawei Ascend P7 Smartphone: Chinese first-tier march

In this post, we will talk about the new flagship Huawei, which should go on sale in June. Moreover, according to a good tradition, we will not only look at the device from the outside, but also admire the filling.

I suggest starting with the history of the creation of this model, which walkers from the Middle Kingdom brought to Moscow.

    This is how the

sun rose over Shenzhen. Funny bunnies played on the walls of the huge office of the president of Huawei on the 36th floor of the most beautiful skyscraper of the capital of the Chinese high-tech. For forty minutes now, in the center of it, in a respectful pose, was the chief designer young Liao, already accustomed to what everyone calls him Sly Ive .

Another twenty minutes passed. The secret door silently opened and in a black suit with a bloody lining, a shuffling tank gait, the great leader of Huawei, Richard Yu, entered the office. A mysterious smile played on his tired face.

Richard Yu at the presentation of Huawei Ascend P7

Contrary to usual, Richard did not sit in a chair trimmed with mammoth skin, but went to the young Liao.

“How is your great army of designers, Sly Ive?” Did you follow the order to double it?
    - Yes, comrade Yu! Now we have 180 thousand people. Each of them draws one new smartphone or tablet per day. As usual, most get iPhones and iPads, but we are fighting this!
    - Here, Sly Ive! That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Tell me, what crafts of our unworthy competitors cause you special indignation?
    - iPhone and Sony Xperia, comrade Yu! Sometimes they cause such indignation that rice stew does not deliver the usual pleasure!
    - The ancient masters told us: repeat the demon, and his glory will fall. So why do we repeat only one demon? Isn’t it time to strike at those who have humiliated the great Chinese nation for centuries? Why do you think I’m in a black suit today, and not in jeans and a turtleneck, like the whole of last year?
“I cannot comprehend this metamorphosis, comrade Yu!”
“I learned all night to think like my unworthy copy at Sony, Kazuo Hirai.” I even talked on the Xperia Z1! And in the morning the thought came to my wise head to kill two sparrows with one shot! Give command to your subordinates, Tricky Liao! Let our next flagship smartphone Ascend P7 be on the side similar to the iPhone, and front and rear on the Xperia! We use the energy of two images at once, and competitors will not have a single chance! Let all the flowers bloom in one case!

Kazuo Hirai, Head of All Sony

    - Brilliant, Comrade Yu! Today we will develop one hundred thousand sketches!
    - Yes, let's do it. And immediately proceed to the Ascend P8. After all, last night I wore a blue T-shirt with Nokia Lumia!

From a fairy tale to the past

Some probably will doubt the veracity of the story told above. And completely in vain! When I showed my copy of Ascend P7 to my friends, everyone expressed confidence that this is Sony Xperia Z2. The glass back panel with the characteristic location of the camera and the flash, the shape and especially the power button clearly hinted - where did the spoons draw inspiration. At the same time, much remains of the iPhone. At least the SIM card trays and flash drives are definitely from there.

And what is the result? A person who is not very versed in the birthright of design will say that the device turned out to be strict and simply beautiful. Especially spectacular everyone likes the texture of the back cover, very beautifully shimmering in the sun. To those who can distinguish the Galaxy S3 from the Galaxy S4 by touch, this mix of styles seems more fun than annoying. Personally, I, a longtime Sony-style fan, was even fun to carry the Chinese Xperia in my pocket. Moreover, Ascend P7 is slightly smaller than Z2, and therefore it better fits in your jeans pocket.

Similarities to the Xperia Z1 / Z2not limited to just the exterior. Last year's flagship Ascend P6, like the iPhone, was assembled on cogs, with the first batch allowing access inside, hiding behind a semicircular plastic trim on the bottom of the case. It was she who, in general, made it possible at first glance to distinguish P6 from the iPhone. Using Sony products as inspiration, Huawei also adopted the back cover fastening on double-sided tape. Why this is done is not very clear. After all, Sony and Samsung use adhesive bonding only in moisture-resistant models, and Ascend P7 is not. Perhaps this is a hint about plans for the future, but so far we can only talk about methodical approaches to ... design.

However, enough to look at the exterior, climbed inside.

Using a soldering station, we heat the device a little and carefully remove the back cover. She is really glass. An autopsy shows some peculiarity of the design. Sony on the inner edges of the case has a fairly wide area to which the tape is attached. There are practically no platforms here, and therefore the adhesive tape captures the battery and the motherboard. Yeah, so that's how we managed to achieve compactness!

Contacts on the back cover are a sign of an NFC antenna inside.

In principle, there is nothing wrong with such an attachment, since the benefit of adhesive tape is absolutely the same — why stick to it. But due to the fact that the level of the components inside the case is slightly different, it is not possible to achieve perfect dust tightness. So, when I opened my specimen, we found a micro-slot in the area of the camera lens, where dust had already accumulated ... During the reassembly, the flaw was corrected, but the sediment, as they say, remained. We will write it to some “preliminary” of a specific instance ...

    Dust

Immediately after gaining access to the motherboard, we were alerted by the design of its lower part, where the charging connector and microphone are located. In general, they usually prefer to put this couple not on the board itself, but on the so-called. bottom loop. So that in case of trouble, replace only him, and not the whole board. In Huawei, the design was made monolithic, and the angular transition between the two parts of the board is so thin that when a smartphone with a connected charger falls, it can easily break. And the fastening of the charging connector is not the most reliable. Therefore, with P7 you need to be pretty careful to avoid having to go to the service center.

We climb further. As usual, the processor is hidden behind heat-dissipating screens. We take them off, smile at the unusually pink color of thermal grease and find exactly the same design as in the recently disassembled tablet Huawei MediaPad X1 7.0 . The smartphone uses its own SoC HiSilicon Kirin 910T with 4 ARM Cortex A9 cores operating at a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz. The graphics core is the quad-core Mali-450.

Despite the transition to 28-nanometer technology, the chip turned out to be quite large. Noticeably more than a 2-gigabyte RAM chip. Therefore, they were not placed a “sandwich”, as in the vast majority of smartphones and tablets, released three in recent years, but next. In terms of cooling efficiency, this is of course the right decision. Running a little ahead, I’ll say that even under a good load, the back wall of the smartphone does not glow and remains a little warm. Well, if there is enough free space on the board - why not?

When parsing, I was very interested in the design of the speaker, because its sound is truly outstanding. It plays not only loudly, but also with a sufficiently large frequency range. No joke, even the bass is felt! It turned out to be of the original design, and even with a built-in antenna unit (right, why should the place go in vain). As for the sound in the headphones, it is also loud, but in quality does not reach the remaining standard LG G2.

The front camera module against the background of the brothers looks gigantic, and no wonder - because its resolution is as much as 8 megapixels. In Huawei, this was made one of the “chips” of the device: they say, if you like to fuck bowstake selfies, there are no alternatives to the Huawei Ascend P7. After making several self-portraits, I came to the conclusion that it was not only megapixels, and despite the marvelous resolution, the results of the P7 camera's work are not very different from what the iPhone 5 / 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z2 offer. But, on the other hand, it’s no worse, and this is already an achievement.

The front camera on the left.

Interestingly, is it the same Sunny, which in the days of my childhood made radio receivers and players of the second grade, or some other?

As for the main camera, I really liked it. At first, it is just breathtaking from the richness of the shades. I can’t even believe that life around is so good. With a little more careful study of frames, traces of the work of miracle algorithms that enhance shades are found. However, they are tactful enough and do not bring the image to the level of a comic book, making it simply "beautiful."

At the presentation, it was said that inside is a special ISP “SLR level”. He did not rush into the eyes, but - believe

The background is very effectively blurred, and good results are obtained when shooting in poor lighting conditions. In general, the only thing I can complain about is the inability to turn off the shutter sound when shooting. Only together with all the other sounds of the smartphone. In general, the photographic part of the Ascend P7 is a huge step forward compared to the predecessor P6. The result is quite at the level of the flagships of Apple, Sony and Samsung. By the way, perhaps one of the secrets of high-quality images was the rejection of attempts to shrink files to the size of a chicken butt. One frame made on P7 weighs 5-6 MB, which is quite reasonable for a resolution of 13 megapixels. Given that flash drives are now inexpensive, I am for both sizes with such hands.

Almost all frames in original resolution can be downloaded here .

Speaking of memory. On board the smartphone 16 GB, of which 12 are available to the user. You can insert your own flash drive, but for some reason none of the 64 GB in P7 worked, only 32. This is rather strange, because the press release says about 64 GB support. Perhaps the point is not quite the final firmware.

As usual, mysterious letters await us under the board. And you can also find out what this instance began to do at the end of March 2014.

The overall impression of the design is controversial. Compared to last year's P6, progress is very big. Everything has become stricter, the headphone and charging connectors are located in convenient places for the user, and not where it happened. At the same time, a fragile place in the motherboard forces the user to exercise some caution, and not fixing the back cover fastened by Sony in some cases can lead to the effect of a “vacuum cleaner”, and the accumulated dust cannot be cleaned without a visit to the service center. But nothing will be trained on cats, and P8 will be made more accurate and will certainly become waterproof.

    User experience

The performance of the proprietary Huawei SoC is not a record. In the Antutu benchmark, the device knocks out a little less than 25,000 points, that is, approximately at the level of the Galaxy S4, Xperia Z and other last year's flagships. If you buy a smartphone to run benchmarks, P7 is not the best option. But, honestly, such a performance device with FullHD-screen is enough. The shell is fast, Asphalt 8 games don't slow down - so what more could you want? But the hardware turned out to be very energy efficient. Even while driving a smartphone in the tail and in the mane, I have never managed to put the battery in a day more than 50%. And this is not bad at all considering its non-record 2460 mAh capacity.

True, Huawei went to one trick. Zealously inspired by Sony smartphones, the Stamina mode was also dragged into the P7, for obvious reasons abandoning the original name. Only in Sony you need to enable it yourself, and in P7 everything is turned on by default. And when the screen is off, synchronization with social networks and other energy-intensive processes do not work. I noticed this immediately and immediately turned it off. So, what is funny, it practically did not affect the time of work.

I really liked the screen. Very straightforward. High-quality 5-inch IPS-matrix with FullHD resolution gives a clear picture with eye-catching colors. The only drawback is the frankly bad algorithm of the automatic backlight control. On the street, he copes with his duties well, but at home he constantly pulls virtual levers back and forth, and this is slightly annoying. Therefore, when watching movies, I turned it off. I hope this twitch is treated with firmware.

The smartphone supports LTE. I tested it on MegaFon and MTS sim cards, and it really works, they didn’t deceive me. My colleague, who also tested P7, complained of poor voice quality on the MTS network, but I didn’t notice anything like that - I can hear perfectly well and the interlocutor. But the Wi-Fi module was clearly saved: it only supports the 2.4 GHz band, which is not very good at the present time, when 2.4 GHz is littered to disgrace. The flagships of competitors have been able to connect to 5 GHz for more than a year ...

About the shell Emotion UI 2.3. I will not say anything bad or good. When it was created, iOS was clearly inspired, adding the features that Android gives. It turned out pretty faceless, but quite convenient. I immediately demolished all branded widgets, put my own - and it became good. The kit comes with a dozen topics that significantly transform the interface. Over time, they promise the opportunity to download them from the Internet, but so far in the relevant section of the Themes application there is nothing.

I walked with a smartphone for about a week and was completely satisfied with it. So what? Everyone around me thinks that I have Z2 and a little envy. The device works stably, all applications behave correctly and do not crash. The screen and camera are great. The sound will raise the dead. The battery is long-playing. So what more could you ask for?

Probably only humane prices.Ascend P6 tried to sell at 19,990 last year , and for some reason no one was eager to buy it. They seem to promise to make the starting price of P7 at 17,000, but I honestly doubt it. In Europe, it will definitely cost 449 euros, and this at the current exchange rate is more than 20 thousand rubles ... So, most likely, again twenty at the start with a fairly rapid reduction to 17-18. But they would have put 16 at the start, and market share could have pulled ahead with a rapid jack. After all, the Ascend P7 can only compete with last year's flagships, which is uncompromising, and they cost about that. Well, it's not my business.

At the presentation, Huawei promised to soon release the P7 version, where the slot for a memory card will be universal. You want to insert a card, but you want a second SIM card. This is a very sensible idea. In the end, if you do not carry a large media library with you, 12 on-board gigabytes is enough. But a dvuhsimochnik of such a level and with such a camera is very interesting.

    Intermediate finale

This text will end on a slightly bitter note. Many flagships of different manufacturers passed through our hands with master Levchenko, and after disassembling, they all felt great. But Huawei Ascend P7 was an exception. From the first time, we were not able to glue the back cover securely enough - the upper right corner moved away. And after another cycle of heating-sizing-heating, the screen went dark spots. Master Levchenko suggested that the backlight reflectors flew, because the pixels themselves burn as they should.

Nothing to do about! Despite the fact that the device has not really gone on sale, eBay already has spare parts for it. In particular, the complete screen costs 2,500 rubles with delivery, which is inexpensive for a 5-inch copy with FullHD resolution. For comparison, the Xperia Z1 screen costs a thousand rubles more. Ordered, we will change. The device as a whole is painfully good, it's a pity to just throw it away.

Honestly, this is the first Huawei that I wanted to use not only for testing, but also for personal needs. Given that with previous models, the company ranks third in the world in the number of sold devices and fifth in terms of revenue, the prospects for the Chinese are not weak.

It’s not just Apple that’s tight.
