Review MSI S12 Netbook
AMD A4-5000 / 11.6 "/ 1366x768 / gloss / 4Gb / 500Gb / Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / DOS / ~ 11-14 TR
I decided to write this review because I was fascinated by this netbook as soon as I found it.
The set of my mandatory requirements for laptop computers, as it turned out, was very demanding:
My expectations from the MSI S12 were fully justified, so I wanted to definitely share it, suddenly someone would come in handy too. Under the cut, of course, there will be some pictures, YouTube videos, agitation, provocations and other information about how I see the “ right netbook ” and why this copy is exactly “it”.

For those who do not want to read anything, but want everything at once, I recommend watching YouTube videos . For example this one:
For everyone else I can offer:

In the context of:
<Physics />
Since "physics" still will not give a complete picture, you need to move on to personal impressions.
I will not describe the box, it is standard, I did not expect anything but a beech, a block and pieces of paper. And so it happened. From the positive about the packaging, I can only say that the black color in my opinion looks stylish, and the presence of a pen is convenient. There was a full specification on board the box, and the matrix cover was covered with a cloth that can be reused as a cover for it, if you want to be as accurate as possible and not scratch the gloss during transportation.
I ordered it on May 5, it arrived on May 12, that is, I have it for almost a week.

Compare with laptops on Intel CPUs I do not see any point, since these are generally solutions of different levels. It will be clear to anyone who understands why Linux is needed, who read Charles Petsold's “Code” and understand how it works, that the 4 Kabini cores for Linux is a perfectly acceptable solution compared to the 2 cores from mobile Intel for Microsoft.
Intel's "gain" from two memory channels, according to various estimates, gives an increase of 10-15% with typical use. But - this is in theory. In practice, budget-compatible models in Intel will have DDR3 10600, not the 12800 used here. By the way, the memory controller from AMD is compatible with lower frequencies of the slats, if necessary. That is, this “gain” at comparable product prices will be very, very doubtful. And, I note that the AMD A4-5000 uses 2 slots per channel, while Intel mobiles just go 2 channels in the same conditions. What is "better" to address "all" memory on one bus, or two? In my opinion, the simpler the better.
And again, in Intel-compatible solutions, you will have a maximum of 8 Gb. It is clear that it seems like more is not necessary. And I need, I have tasks that I need Memory. This is, for example, In Memory DB under Node.JS. You may notice that there is an SSD, but you can do more SWAP. But, believe it or not, that’s not it.
For me personally, Intel's "budget" solutions, which can be compared at a cost, look "depressing." The graphics here are better than two times. I think that putting Windows on this laptop in general is a mistake. And its modifications with touch screen are solutions that are understandable, for example, if you are developing Soft for Touch. By the way Touch there will be 10 finger.
The ability to install a second screw is also a big plus for me. For those who do not yet have an SSD, it will be possible to buy a budget mSATA and insert it next to the factory screw. The SSD for this machine gives a twofold increase, it is just physically necessary if you are going to do something like developing software. Heavy calcul. mat. tasks like editing a video comp, of course, will not pull, but NetBeans is spinning around here quite acceptable.
There is also a PCI bus multiplier in the BIOS, I’ll tell you about it separately ... The fact is that, as the market comments rightly say, the WiFi controller is bad here, especially if you have Linux. It is built on an RTL8723ae chip. Under Linux, it’s a “bidah,” because it will not start. On Windows, everything will be “Right Ok.” But under Debian \ Ubuntu \ Mint, this card is seen and detected on all the latest kernels without problems, but it itself "point blank" does not see a single network, and does not connect to the "hidden" ones. Since I couldn’t “defeat” the drivers running in the system or “get” the drivers from the source codes found in different forums, I decided to install another WiFi module in a couple of hours.
At first I bought a TP-Link TL-WIN725N WiFi whistle . By the way, a great device. Compact, the network on 802.11n holds as stated, despite the microscopic size of the components (I disassembled and looked). The chip in it is also RealTek, but the drivers got together and got up on this second link from google. The downside is that when updating the kernel they will need to make && make install again, this is normal, but it doesn’t suit me.
Because I took S12 to replace my already old Acer Aspire One AO725 on an AMD C-60 stone, then I decided to just pull out the WiFi module from it, because the drivers for most Atheros chips in Linux plow “sparks”. But, it did not start ... After thinking a bit with my head, I climbed into the BIOS and changed the bus multiplier from 32 to 128 clock cycles. Voila :)
Having made sure that it is possible to deal with WiFi, but still do not want to leave the old laptop without it, by a simple search and based on the data from here, it was decided to replace WiFi with the INTEL 2230BNHMW module .
By the way, S12 understands very simply. After removing the battery and the replacement cover HDD and SO-DIMM, we further unscrew all the screws “in a circle” and remove the bottom cover. The cogs are located strictly down, there are no side and others, it is convenient. In order to “pry” the guitar pick is very helpful, although the latches are not tight. Be careful, as the sound outputs “hinder” a little to remove the bottom cover, they just have to be slightly pressed into the wall. Of the loops, you need to "tilt" only one that goes to USB attached to the removable bottom, and not to the board. Yes, there is a heat pipe for the CPU Cooler and a turbine :) I
disassembled it in the store itself, because it's really a matter of five minutes. I got up right away, on the 32 multiplier. Wonderful WiFi 300N and BlueTooth 4.0 from the inventor of WiFi. Sensation, it was as if crossed by Usain Boltat 100 meters. WiFi from Intel together with a stone from AMD, to which the technique has reached :) The subsequent “home” testing also did not reveal any problems.
I immediately replaced thermal cement, but I didn’t get a win, apparently the heat capacity of the tube and turbine performance still take place. The fan, that is, is quiet. Not that he is not heard at all, but he does not bother. By the standards of Intel Based people, a stone, of course, will be tepid. No load 54-57, and when the load just turns on the fan and does not grow above 60. But this is quite normal for AMD. Linux tells me that the "high" temperature will be considered 70 degrees, and the shutdown will be at 100. For AMD - this is ok, there is nothing to fear. My old C-60 worked in the range 69-85 and turned off at 93 (there were a couple of times under the default windows, because Acer saved a lot on the cooler there). Here the cooler is quite, everything is OK. Besides spec lm-sensorstells you that on the last kernels everything will be fine. So I probably just wait for Mint 17 (June, sort of), or try Ubuntu 14.10.
Yes, I added a 4 gigabyte memory card and inserted an SSD . Naturally, because I have Linux, there was no talk of any “reinstallation”, and everything worked as before, just an order of magnitude faster.
According to subjective feelings, I now have almost a MacBook Air 11. It weighs a little more, 1.3 kg, not 1.1, and is not so "stylish." But then I have a normal keyboard, I can disassemble and assemble my computer in 5 minutes, and I can put 2 times more memory than on Air, and I do not have Intel.
It remains to make it better than Air! To do this, replace the 1366x768 stock matrix with something Full HD. The matrix is removed even faster than the case is disassembled. Just pick up the mediator decorative panel in the area of the camera and lead in a circle. There is nothing to fear, the latches are even easier. The matrix rests on four cogs, and the loop only leads to it. Sticker on Model: M116XW05-V1FH, SN: FE104B116CZ01407. There is still an important E204356. A search by model tells you to learn Korean. It's good that Chrome can translate old ladies. Since I did not find anything sane, I began to look for compatible Full HD. By typing, I realized that I need to look for compatible with 116XW05 on the panelook website. I found models n116hse-ea1 and TOP-FHD-116L-FLR-S. It is a miracle that these models are in our N-sk. I went to the store, but the contact pad of the loop did not fit. There is also a 30-pin LVDS, but the tracks are a couple of millimeters narrower. I don’t know what to do, if I find it, I will unsubscribe.
<Feelings />
Do not judge strictly, I am doing a review for the first time, and in general - I can’t get enough of it, so I spent the whole Saturday on it :)
Something like this, here.
I decided to write this review because I was fascinated by this netbook as soon as I found it.
The set of my mandatory requirements for laptop computers, as it turned out, was very demanding:
- Matrix 11.6 " - even 13.3" is already too much for me.
- Minimum 16Gb DDR3-3L 1600 ( 12800 ).
- Weight with power supply up to 1.5 kg. - It's just a Must Have, as it is very comfortable.
- 4 Core CPU , preferably AMD Kabini \ Kaveri .
Not that I “don't like” the Intel Core i5-i7.
But I don’t need so much to work.
Although, by the way, yes - I’ve been a fan of AMD for about 15 years.
I like Intel as an innovator.
But competition must be free. - The presence of Legacy BIOS mode .
Not that I “dislike” Microsoft.
Although, by the way, yes - I have Linux for 10 years already.
Therefore, the presence of UEFI Secure Boot or other restrictions would make me very upset.
I still need to work, and not to understand why it slows down / fell \ is limited and the like. - Normal graphics subsystem, since at work I connect to a Full HD monitor. Accordingly, the desire to see something in High Res also sometimes arises. Yes, and at home on the TV there is HDMI , which sometimes needs to show something.
- Full keyboard. I don’t look at the keys for a long time. But the man who invented in my old Acer to save me from the full arrows and keys Home, End, PgDn and PgUp - he clearly wanted to make me ill. NEVER more! Because I could not get used to this squalor in two years.
-
I would also like to have:
- Hard matrix cover . Prior to that, I had an Acer Aspire One AO725. Watching it “squeeze” during closing and, especially, opening, was very scary.
- The presence of a LAN connector and 3 USB ports. It was once two - it was not enough. There were four, but not necessary, since in this case it was already easier to buy a hub. It is desirable to have USB 3.0 on at least one of them. LAN is required, as WiFi may not be in the “field” environment.
- The ability to quickly disassemble and assemble. This is important for me, because I like to watch what's inside, I like to change what I don't like. For a guarantee, I usually “put it with the device” a couple of hours after the purchase. Therefore, the device should not be expensive, because I will be sorry if I nevertheless suddenly break it. And I do not want to get upset over trifles. It’s better I can fix it myself, if that, without this dreary expectation from a service center with unclear prospects.
- The ability to "live" without a battery for several hours. I don’t need ten, I have a power outlet at work, and I also have a home. Just so as not to worry about the battery for some normal time. Sit in a cafe for a cup of coffee on the way to work, and then turn off the beech, so as not to load again upon arrival. Or watch a movie on TV without connecting an adapter. Or show a presentation at a meeting with a customer. Three hours, I don’t need anymore. Moreover, it is also desirable that the time of the full charge is two to three times less than the discharge time.
- Microphone input, sometimes I still write music.

A bunch of whining
<Lyrics />Another annoying thing was that all contextual advertising was now trying to sell me my already found beech. And from those sites where I did not even go. Of course, it was decided by clearing the Cookies, but since I didn’t want to understand “where and what”, I also lost a lot of valuable along the way.
In addition, at the time of the fence, the store’s logistics company refused to open the box before payment. The hour-long negotiations with the store did not lead to anything, although at the time of the order the operator vowed and swore that I would not only be able to open it, but I could also make sure that the interiors were the ones I needed. I had to take a chance - it was very scary, because the snowball wasted time, if there was suddenly a brick there, it grew very extraordinary.
Another disadvantage in the karma of the store was that they did not meet the delivery deadlines. They referred to the logistics company and the May holidays. After waiting for the coveted SMS all the tenth of May, I lost the precious opportunity to eat fried meat with friends. As a result, I had to stay without lunch on a working day. And I received nothing but a telephone apology and any bonuses there during the next order, it’s a shame.
In general, it turned out somehow too angry. You expect a normal relationship, but in the end you get only some kind of apology there that might simply not exist if everyone did their work as expected. It is, of course, understandable that “get it first”, but somehow it’s already tired, all the same, the twenty-first century in the yard, and you can already, in the end, start reading some correct books.
Although, of course, the girls are all polite and pleasant, and in vain I brought them to a state of “do not pick up”, because there really was not a brick. I called them back later, said thanks that everything was fine, wished me successful work - the sound of a plate falling from my shoulders was clearly heard in the handset ...
Also, the advantages of this store should certainly include more than an adequate price, a very convenient site and a desire to understand the problem with the operator.

<Physics />
<feelings>
- A full-fledged keyboard is a dream come true! It occupies 2/3 of the plane, so the Touchpad does not deserve attention, it just is, they donated it to make the keys the right size.
- The matrix is very nice looking, although not IPS, but there is no pixelation at all. Viewing angles are also very even, sitting in a half-turn there are no changes at all, then they are also very “visible”. The gloss, however, glare slightly, but - this is normal.
- The aluminum die cover is Must Have. Reliable!
- The location of the headphone jack in the lower right corner is Best!
- The power connector is in the upper left. The power supply is small and light. The only thing is that he has a thick cord from the unit to the outlet, and a connector with a euro plug. I don’t know about you, but it’s not convenient for me. Already found a compatible unit from ASUS on the radio market for 900 rubles.
Although, of course, if desired ... But the price tag is the same.

Lenovo, by the way, also has the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge e145, it is one to one like this.

<Feelings />
Do not judge strictly, I am doing a review for the first time, and in general - I can’t get enough of it, so I spent the whole Saturday on it :)
Something like this, here.
