Winamp fans suggest AOL make it open source

Last week, AOL Corporation announced the cessation of development and closure of the Winamp player. Later, rumors appeared that Microsoft and SHOUTcast want to buy it and the service , but fans of a media player with a 16-year history offer the best solution - open the source of the player and transmit them to the public for further development.

The “Save Winamp” campaign site is now open and a subscription has been organized for a petition for turning the player into an open source product.

“The history of digital music began with Winamp,” the site says. "Our goal is to convince Nullsoft to open source, and we will continue to develop them."

“If AOL follows the path of open source, then the player will live forever, and will be in the hands of people who love it and use it every day.”

Now more than 23,000 people have already joined the petition.
