Testing and comparing Fusion-io ioScale and ioDrive2 cards

Having received a rather decent amount of positive feedback on the cycle of our articles that shed light on Fusion-io products, ADVANSERV decided not to stop at the result achieved and continued to pursue the same course. We can proudly say that this time at our disposal was a very inaccessible, until recently, card from the new ioScale line . What does the manufacturer promise us? - if you describe in a few words, you get a short, but capacious - just as fast, but for less money! It sounds very tempting. Trust, as they say, but check, we will try to figure it out ourselves!

For clarity, we decided to add the results of our past ioDrive2 series card tests to the new tests .so that you have the opportunity to study and compare the performance of both products yourself.
Before you start testing the product, let's find out what kind of outlandish beast in front of us. The presentation exclusively provided to us by the manufacturing company as the official representative of Fusion-io in Russia will help us with this. So, what is the card proper for and what does it offer?

Now we proceed directly to testing the product. As a test sample, we had an ioScale 825Gb card.
The configuration of our test bench has not changed from the last time:

    Platform - HP ProLiant DL380 G7
    Processor - Xeon E5606
    Memory - 8 GB
    Hard Drives - 2xSAS 146 GB 10k

The test suite also did not change, proving its viability:
    • AS SSD Benchmark
    • ATTO Disk Benchmark
    • CrystalDiskMark 3
    • Fio
    • Iometr
    • SQLIO

For the sake of clarity, we decided to add the results of our previous tests of the ioDrive2 series cards for clarity , so that you have the opportunity to study and compare the performance of both products.

If we talk about software, then all the features that were present on ioDrive2 cards are also saved on ioScale, in more detail we have already examined this in our previous article.
Conducting tests and analyzing the data obtained, we were alerted by the unusually low rates that ioDrive2 produced . After thinking a bit about the possible reasons, by common efforts we came to the conclusion that the problem probably lies in the firmware installed on ioDrive2. We install the latest driver version and see:

Testing was performed with the following parameters:
    Total Length = 256 Mb
    Queue Depth = 2-10

These results are more like the truth, which once again reminds us of how important it is to monitor outgoing updates!
We can say with confidence that the test results pleasantly surprised us. The speed of ioScale approaches the performance of ioDrive2 , and sometimes confidently catches up with it, and all this at a significantly lower cost of the product!
Speaking of cost, the pricing procedure starts at 100k rubles per 410Gb card, which is comparable to the price tags of the closest competitors. However, for example, a similarly priced OCZ card has a capacity of only 300Gb and is significantly inferior to ioScale in speed.
Among the many advantages, there should always be a drawback, and it really is. These wonderful cards are available for purchase in Russia only when ordering in an amount of 10 pieces or more. But we did something to neutralize this shortcoming!
Possessing the rights of an official partner of Fusion-io in Russia, ADVANSERV, got the opportunity to order this product in a smaller volume, thereby making it more affordable for buyers in our country. We are glad that we were able to find a compromise by the manufacturer, and we will be happy to recommend this product to our customers.
I want to remind you that you can take this card from us to Demo for testing , or we can provide a remote server configured for your tasks and with a board installed on it. For all questions regarding Fusion-io, please contact our line manager Alexei Kotov .
