Canonisal announces Ubuntu WebApps

Today, Mark Shuttleworth announced that the October release of Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Queztal will include a technology for working with web applications without explicit user interaction with the browser - Ubuntu WebApps.

For the user, the work of the new function is as follows - when visiting some popular site supported by the system as part of WebApps, the browser (in addition to Firefox also supports Chrome and Chromium) suggests installing the site as a web application in the system for launching through a launcher or just an icon on the desktop. In the future, when launching a WebApp application, the site will actually open, or it will be supported without a browser — for example, Gmail WebApp will signal a new message or Last.fm WebApp will allow you to control streaming playback directly from the audio control widget in system. It is important to note that work with the remote site is still provided by the browser, so you cannot close it and get something like a standalone application.

At the moment, Canonical has provided WebApps support for more than 40 sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, Google+ and several others. Ubuntu 12.04 users will receive an update in the next few days.
