Game consoles' energy consumption is constantly growing - data from one study

The other day, the results of one interesting study conducted by specialists from Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Mellon University) were published. This study deals with the energy consumption of gaming consoles. It turns out that consoles consume a lot of energy, while in idle mode, when displaying the average, these devices consume more energy than in active mode.

So, about 68% of the energy consumed by game consoles in 2010 was consumed by these idle devices. If you translate all this into dollars, you get 1.24 billion US dollars (10.8 TW of energy). And this is not the limit, because customers are buying more and more consoles, and the energy consumption of these devices is growing. So, in 2010, about 1% of the energy consumed by households was spent on providing the work of game consoles. This is 50% more than in 2007.

Unfortunately, data for 2011-2012 are not yet available, only the results of a study for 2010 are available. But it is clear that over the years this trend is clearly striving to increase. According to researchers, now consoles are not just a device with which you can play games. This is a media center that also allows you to watch videos and listen to music. So fewer people turn off their gaming devices after the game. Often they are left turned on to perform other tasks, and to complete these tasks, consoles remain turned on.

Experts believe that if all owners of game consoles turn on the option to automatically turn off the console when it is idle for a certain time, this will reduce the cost of "game" energy by 75%, compared with the current level. Those. it's almost a billion dollars saved. Manufacturers have provided a feature to automatically turn off the device, but by default it is turned off, and to enable it you need to go to the settings.

Another opportunity to reduce the energy consumption of consoles is to bring the console to Energy Star standards. It is clear that this is the business of manufacturers.
