In the top ten: A personal story about how to become an RHCA, and that you can get from this
We all heard that knowledge is power, however, it is not always obvious where it is to get the very knowledge that will make you a qualified system administrator or architect who is ready for the development of technology and will increase your value in the eyes of potential employers.

We talked with Alexey Usov, a certified RHCA Level XIII specialist, about how to choose a training program, why certification is needed, how exams are taken, how to prepare for them, and what all this gives at the exit.
Once Alexey thought about how to systematize the knowledge about Linux accumulated over the years of work, and at the same time raise his price in the labor market. Now he is RHCA Level XIII (Certification ID 150-166-817), one of the 10 most certified specialists in the world. In less than 3 years, he has grown from a systems engineer to an architect, and his salary has increased almost 3 times.
Red Hat: What was the reason for the decision to pass professional certification?
Alexey Usov:By August 2015, I already had some experience with Linux and Open Source, but my knowledge was very fragmented and unsystematic, because they were recruited in practice. In this regard, I thought about certification as a way to systematize my knowledge and close gaps in them in order to increase my value in the eyes of potential employers.
I passed the initial exams EX200 and EX300 in September 2015 and April 2016, respectively. Such a break was due to the fact that at the beginning I did not plan to go further than RHCE, but the success stories of my acquaintances convinced me to continue working, and in September 2016 I passed 2 of my first expert exams.
I passed the remaining exams for a specially configured laptop under remote supervision. Despite the fact that I was the first person in the CIS who passed the exam in February 2017 using a new technology, the process went without problems and was even more convenient than a group format.
How did certification help a career?
In July 2017, I passed the 7th exam and entered the RHCA, becoming the 4th in Russia. I prepared for all the exams on my own, using only official documentation and a virtual environment deployed on Vagrant / CentOS 7.
Now, after 2.5 years of work, I have the status of RHCA Level XIII, which is the highest in the CIS and also puts me in the top 10 in the world. During this time, I grew in the position from system engineer to architect and my salary increased almost 3 times. I achieved this result equally, thanks to my work and the innovative approach of Red Hat.
At the moment I am working remotely for an American partner company Red Hat and are preparing documents for moving to the United States. My qualifications allowed me to advise architects working on projects of companies such as Red Hat, CenturyLink, Imperva, VMWare, Microsoft, US Foods, Hewlett-Packard, Juniper, Nutanix and Oracle. I am also a Red Hat Certified Red Hat Certified Trainer (RHCI). Certification promoted my interest in relevant Red Hat products, in particular, the OpenShift Container Platform, and his in-depth study gave me the skills needed to write a book, due out in August of this year.
Why Red Hat?
Red Hat is one of the main contributors of changes to the Linux kernel, has an extensive portfolio of Linux-related products in one way or another, and has the most well-thought-out Linux certification system that provides tasks on a real system, not tests. Thus, by hiring a Red Hat certified specialist, you can be sure that this person not only read about technology or looked at the work of others, but did it himself. Red Hat recognizes the importance of a practical approach to assessing candidates' skills and understands the difference between knowing the theory and using it. Therefore, Red Hat certificates are recognized worldwide as proof of the skills of applicants for the positions of system administrators, engineers, and architects. There is also a direct relationship between professional certification and the level of wages.
In addition, there is an increasing demand for containerization and container management technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. One of the strategic products of Red Hat is OpenShift, built on the technologies mentioned above, the interest to which has greatly increased recently in the USA. Red Hat offers 2 exams to assess the skills of specialists in working with this product:
Thus, certification in certain technologies is beneficial for both a business that receives a qualified specialist and a competitor who enhances its value in the market.
What is the attitude towards certification in IT?
During my career I have often come across skepticism of my colleagues regarding the need for certification. Main reasons:
Let's look at each one individually.
If you evaluate the feasibility solely from the financial side, the cost can be scary. But you always need to look wider and evaluate the long-term perspective - consider these expenses as a career investment that will surely pay off. I can say that I decided to certify above RHCE only by the example of successful colleagues. Despite the fact that there is still a lot of work, I am pleased with the result. Believe it or not - everyone decides for himself. But while some doubt, others do.
Direct experience with real technologies on real projects is the key factor that the employer looks at - this is a fact. But in large companies that have contractual obligations to customers, other things being equal, with a high degree of probability, they will give preference to a certified candidate. Thus, the answer to the question of the need for certification is determined by the nature of the business with which you plan to work. Work in start-ups, as a rule, does not require this, but it gives smaller prospects for earnings and career growth. On the other hand, the position of a leading architect in the banking or insurance sector implies a more careful selection of candidates and certificates of major market players will give you an advantage. Here we must not forget that that the price for employers have only the top certificates of such major vendors as Red Hat, Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, VMWare and Oracle. The nature of certification is also of great importance - a practical approach, like Red Hat, unlike the test, ensures that a person not only learned the answers, but knows how to solve this or that problem, will not waste working time on learning from scratch. and also possesses analytical skills and perseverance.
Certification does not provide comprehensive knowledge of all the nuances of the technology or product, but is a confirmation that the line indicated in the resume is worth more than a superficial acquaintance (“launched, looked and turned off”, “I started”). Given the enormous complexity and diversity of modern technologies, one can always ask a question that even the holder of all top certificates in the industry or the veteran of the industry will not answer. For details, you can always refer to the documentation, the importance of understanding the general principles, concepts and areas of applicability of various technologies, the ability to navigate in their diversity. In addition, certification is an excellent way to systematize knowledge and form horizons with an understanding of the place of each technology in a common ecosystem, which is necessary for an architect.
What are individual exams?
First introduced by the Red Hat Corporation almost 4 years ago, individual exams became available in the CIS only in February 2017. Before that, it was possible to take only in groups under the supervision of an instructor. In addition, not all exams were available even for this format due to the lack of certification from instructors. Since I was aimed at obtaining the status of RHCA, this restriction made me dependent on someone else's schedule and the fullness of the groups, which greatly hindered my progress. The participation of Inventa (note - the Russian training partner of Red Hat) in the program of expanding the geography of individual exams provided an excellent opportunity to work in accordance with its schedule and not buy a ticket for a train or a plane. Technically, everything is implemented as a remote graphical session under the supervision of the examiner.
Individual exams, in turn, are available in 2 formats: a small dedicated workplace with a rigidly mounted monitor or a ThinkPad laptop with built-in and external webcams. Inventuta is the last version implemented and it is being transitioned around the world. Important: the exam is not allowed to take wristwatches and any electronics, therefore, I recommend to put them in advance in the locker room of the Training Center in advance. You can take only tara with a drink. Also, to establish the identity, you must have a document with the English spelling of your name - as a rule, this is a passport. In practice, this is not a strict requirement; in case of its absence, you need to contact the regional manager of Red Hat in advance and agree on the use of another document. One of my exams just fell for that period when my passport was at the visa application center. I wrote a letter to the EMEA manager at Red Hat, and he asked for a scan of my passport, which I sent to the proctor. On the exam, I showed this document and there were no problems.
The procedure for booking an exam is quite simple and begins with entering the exam scheduler with the parameters of your Red Hat account, after which you will be presented with a panel with all the exams ordered, from which you can choose the right one.

Examinations appear in the scheduler either after ordering at the TC, which, in turn, orders them from Red Hat, or after ordering from the portal of the educational subscription - in the second case, they usually become available within a few minutes. The code for each exam is different from the one shown on the Red Hat portal - the standard code always has the suffix “K” (Kiosk is the old name of the individual format) and sometimes the version of the exam if it has been or has recently been updated. Example: EX125V30K, where V30 is the Ceph Storage 3.0 product version, and K is a sign of the individual exam.
In the next step, select the exam, the country and click Schedule Exam.

Note: I first booked an exam under a new scheme, being in the USA, so I didn’t have to upload an ID card, but for booking in Russia, I would need to provide a passport scan, after approval of which you can choose the date and time as described below. Check usually takes no more than half an hour.
Based on your location, the system will offer options to choose from. In my case, this is a training center in Phoenix, USA. In Moscow it will be Invent.

Clicking on Schedule Exam under the appropriate center, you get to the date and time selection menu, after which you will receive a confirmation on the mail specified in the account.

Important: you can cancel the exam or change the date no later than 24 hours before the start of the exam!
How are the individual exams?
At the break it will be possible to get out only after the 1st hour of the exam and for no more than 10 minutes. To do this, click the Break button at the top of the chat and notify the observer.

Disadvantages:
The main resource for examinations is time, so the recommendations below refer to its economy. They are common and applicable not only to the individual format:
And you can learn more about the subscription to training?
Since the majority of certified specialists are busy people, the question of maximally efficient use of time during training is of particular importance. Of course, nothing prevents you from preparing on your own, using official documentation and your own unfolded environment. But with such an approach, you will need to study a very wide range of topics in order to increase the likelihood of passing, and spend time on the fact that you will not need it in the exam, and without practice it will be quickly forgotten anyway. Therefore, in order to increase the efficiency of the process, it may be more profitable to invest in an official training course. The key advantage of this approach is targeted study of the material under the guidance of a specialist who knows all the nuances of the upcoming exam.
But simple arithmetic will quickly show that achieving RHCA from scratch with this approach will be very expensive - we are talking about hundreds of thousands of rubles. Further costs will only grow. What to do if the budget is limited? Answer: Red Hat Learning Subscription (RHLS). By paying a fixed amount, for 1 year you get access to the same materials as in the training center, which gives you the opportunity to prepare yourself. Possible disadvantages are the lack of live communication and exchange of experience with the teacher and other students in the classroom, as well as the fact that all teaching materials, including videotapes of lectures, are provided only in English. (Update from Red Hat - 12 courses have already been translated into Russian, and we continue to increase their number).
Moreover, having received the RHCA status, you also get the right to a 50% discount, which makes the offer even more profitable. I managed to save more than 250 thousand rubles on exams alone, paying a little more than 100 thousand rubles after receiving the RHCA.

What is most important in training?
The most important advice that I would like to give to those who wish to do their certification is to learn how to manage their time - to form a training schedule, plan realistic deadlines for exams and stick to them. How are the individual exams?
- You come, sit at the laptop and log in to your account on the Red Hat portal, so make sure you remember the password in advance . At this stage, you can still correct the position of the laptop on the table for convenience.
- Next, you need to read and accept the conditions, after which a chat window will open, in which the exam rules will appear one after another. Some are elementary - for example, do not talk and do not change the position of the laptop after the start of the exam. Others relate to a couple of forbidden key combinations that are intercepted by the browser of the laptop and can "throw" you out of the session. During the briefing and in the middle of the exam you will be asked to take an external camera and show the room, so make sure in advance that there are no extra items on the table. In addition, to verify the identity will need to show the corresponding document in an external webcam.
- Since the exam is conducted remotely, the network connection becomes the main weak link. There may be short-term session breaks, during which you must immediately inform the observer and do not hesitate to request additional time.
- When finished, write to the chat, after which the observer will report that the exam is marked complete, and says goodbye to you.
At the break it will be possible to get out only after the 1st hour of the exam and for no more than 10 minutes. To do this, click the Break button at the top of the chat and notify the observer.
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule, the ability to cancel and transfer the exam 24 hours before the start.
- The result usually arrives in the mail much faster than with group format. In my case, when I finished taking the 3-hour exam at 12 days MST, the letter arrived at 12:40, the verification process is fully automated and follows schedule. But Red Hat reserves the right to delay up to 3 days.
- Lower cost.
Disadvantages:
- Dependence on internet connection. In my experience, this factor had a minimal effect, since Compound breakages were rare and short-lived.
- The need to periodically pay attention to chat notifications about new messages, since The window does not open automatically.
The main resource for examinations is time, so the recommendations below refer to its economy. They are common and applicable not only to the individual format:
- As soon as the desktop of the main system is loaded, start the virtual machines, and in the meantime, read the exam description
- Use the following shortcuts:
- Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + V - to copy and paste commands in the terminal, respectively
- Ctrl + Shift + T - to open a new terminal tab
- Alt + 1..9 - to navigate web browser tabs
- Discover tmux - terminal multiplexer
- Only the result is evaluated, so do not hesitate to use a graphical interface (GUI) to complete the task, where possible. Virtuoso command line will not impress anyone :)
- Carefully read the tasks to identify those that do not depend on the others - they can be done in the first queue, immediately increasing their chances
- Copy the names of objects from tasks - this is faster and will help avoid stupid mistakes. Remember: the exam is checked by the script and it does not distinguish between ignorance of the material and a simple typo.
- Do not sit for long on the same task - do not waste time and get distracted by another. The order of tasks does not always correspond to the complexity and the following may be easier, it can also help to look at the previous task with a new perspective.
- The assignment does not always provide comprehensive information about the required configuration - sometimes you have to think out and improvise
- Feel free to use the bc built-in calculator or the python interpreter for arithmetic calculations. It will be a shame to fail because of a missing zero :)
