Another Google Purchase - RightsNow
Google is about to buy (in fact, the deal is already underway) RightsNow. The latter is engaged in the development of a special kind of software that is responsible for the automatic charging of funds to copyright holders (in the main, this concerns only the music sphere). Since Google is actively promoting its own video (YouTube) and music (Google Music) services, plus it works with music publishers, RightsNow’s technology may come very well.
Generally speaking, the system of deductions to copyright holders is a very difficult matter. Each copyright holder, each music publisher sets its own rules of the game, which means the payment of deductions for a complex system of interest. In this case, it is necessary to link the belonging of any of the "copyrighted" tracks to a specific copyright holder, with all the ensuing consequences in the form of the need to calculate the charges for each track separately.
Difficulties can arise if it is necessary to calculate deductions for each sold track or album. But if it is necessary to pay deductions for the tracks you’ve heard, not the ones downloaded, all this can become even more complicated. Here, the company RightsNow is just developing technologies for automatically calculating the percentage of deductions for purchased / heard tracks with the possibility of introducing an automatic payment system to copyright holders.
Unfortunately, the transaction amount, that is, the purchase price of RightsNow, is still unknown. Perhaps the price will be announced later. Google believes that the technology of the acquired company will help the corporation pay off all copyright holders in time automatically.
