Amazon Kindle Warranty Replacement Instructions

There was already an article on Habré on the warranty return of Amazon Kindle , but I want to expand and supplement it a bit, so this will be the second version.

For those who are not in the know, I explain that Amazon carries out a free replacement warranty for its famous reader, even if it was damaged through your fault (most often - an accidental crash and a broken screen as a result). You could buy a reader directly in Amazon, or you could in any other store - this does not change the matter. However, there are difficulties: free replacement is carried out only in the USA and Europe, so if you are a resident of other neighborhoods, welcome to habrakat.

    1. Get a US address.

First, we need a mailing address in the United States. To do this, use the famous Shipito service . When registering, we need to pay $ 8.5 for obtaining a mailing address. It will be valid for a month and you can send yourself one shipment through it.

    Total: $ 8.5 ≈ 238 rub.

    1.1 Payment.

Possible payment options - by credit card or through PayPal. If your bank card is not suitable for this (or you do not have one at all), it is very convenient to use the MasterCard Prepaid card from the Yandex.Money service. To do this, register on Yandex.Money , replenish the account in any convenient way and order a virtual bank card . When ordering a card, we set the amount that we put on the card balance, for the bold, uncheck the SMS notifications and voila! It must be added that they will not give us a card for $ 8.5, so it makes sense to calculate in advance all the costs and immediately put in the necessary amount. The card is still useful to us.

Costs: 2% for the service ≈ 5 rubles.
    Total 243 rub.

    2. Registering a reader on Amazon.com

If you haven't registered it yet, it's time to do it. We go to the Amazon website, register . In your personal account, we add information about the bank card in the Add a Credit or Debit Card section (we will need this). In the Add a New Address section, add information about the address we received in Shipito . Next, go to the Manage Your Kindle page and select Register a Kindle in the left column. To register, you need the serial number of the device. If you have a second-generation Kindle, then it is indicated on the back of the device. If the third one - then it can be found either through the menu SettingsDevice Informationor on the original packaging. If you don’t have any packaging left, there is no information about the serial number in the store receipt, the screen does not work and you have not registered your Kindle before, then I have bad news - I don’t know how to register your device.

Therefore, if your Kindle has not broken yet, register it now!

By the way! Do not forget to transfer the library from the reader to the local computer - despite the fact that the screen is broken, the device works fine via USB.

    3. Phoning with the operator of Amazon

You need to call directly to Amazon. In theory, you can leave them your phone number and they will call you back so as not to plunge you into regular expenses. But, unfortunately, they do not call Russia, so they will have to take on this work. We call +1 866 321-8851. Skype allows you to call this phone for free. You will have to in English name the email box to which the account is registered on Amazon and the mailing address that you specified. You will be identified and asked what happened to the reader. Feel free to say that you dropped it and the screen crashed.

After finding out the details, they will send you a link to a special picture with barcodes and simply codes, which if we lived in the USA, it would be enough to stick it on the parcel and send it to an encrypted address. This will not work out with us, so directly in a telephone conversation, ask us to send you a real mailing address. If you still send only a picture with a barcode, write in support , indicating the Order ID, which will be in the incoming letter.

Interestingly, in Amazon I was asked to send them information about how much it cost to send a broken device to them. If we used the above barcode, postal services would not cost us anything - their cost is paid by Amazon. They promised to return the money spent by me on postal services to the card (they could not do this - MasterCard Prepaid does not allow to replenish the account). Another surprise was the fact that they were sending a new reader, not waiting for the broken one to come to them. This is already something fantastic by Russian standards. If nothing came to them within a month from the moment of the conversation, an amount equal to the cost of the new reader is debited from your card, so without delaying the matter in a long box, we go to the post office.

    4. Sending a broken Kindle

We pack the reader into the original packaging (I took it from friends), take a printed picture with barcodes (it identifies that the return is from you) and go to the international post office. In Moscow, the only place where you can send an electronic device (even a broken one) to the USA is the international post office on Nagatinskaya .

The cost of departure from Moscow is 319.90 rubles. (simple air)
    Total: 561.90 rubles.

    5. Registration of delivery to Russia

After three days, a notification came from Shipito: the package arrived at your address (even photos of the package are attached). In your personal account indicate the delivery address to Russia. Fill out the customs declaration using the Customs declaration link. Choose a delivery method. I recommend USPS Priority Mail - in this case you will receive a notification in your inbox (real) with which you can go to the post office at the place of residence. USPS Express Mail delivers directly to the address.

Our shipment is small in mass - therefore, cheaper delivery is available to us - USPS Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelope. The cost does not include insurance. Googling about successful experience in obtaining insurance with USPS did not give anything, on the contrary - forums are full of messages that it is unrealistic to get insurance for electronic devices. Therefore, crossing our fingers, select USPS Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelope.

Comment about Kalobok insurance :Obtaining insurance may be problematic, but there is still such a moment: without insurance, the missing package will not even be searched. And with insurance, the sender can make a request about the loss (it seems that at least a month should have passed from the moment of sending). My experience shows that upon such a request, the parcel is usually located (about another month later) and delivered. True, the request should be made by the sender, that is, as I understand it, Shipito. I don’t know if they are doing this.

    Costs:
    Departure: $ 13.95 ≈ 391 rub.
    2% for using MasterCard: $ 0.7 ≈ 8 rubles.

    Total: 961 rub.

    6. Getting the brand new Kindle

After 20 days (in my case), a notification appeared in the mailbox asking me to go to the mail. We take a passport and go. At the post office, before signing for the receipt, be sure to check whether the packaging is broken and whether the weight is as specified.

As a result, about 1000 rubles and for a number of steps taken, you will receive a new Kindle instead of a broken one. Good luck!
