Internet Mathematics 2011. Determining the similarity of images
Most recently, or rather, on May 26, 2011 the results of a very interesting annual competition organized by Yandex - Internet Mathematics 2011 were announced.
The winner of the competition was the Mythical Nizhny Novgorod team consisting of Ilya Lysenkov (captain), Anatoly Baksheev and Maria Dimashova, everything is Itseez.
More than 100 teams took part in the training stage, which lasted about a month (until May 16), in the final stage, lasting only one day (from May 16 to May 17), more than 50 teams sent their results.
This year, the participants had the following task:
There were 6,000 episodes of 5 photographs each, which were obtained by slicing panoramas from the Yandex.Maps service. In each series there could be photographs not from the general panorama (one, two or one). The task was to identify the extra photos in each series.
The main difficulty of the task was that in many pictures there was no clear overlay, it could be photographs taken at different angles, with zoom, at different distances to objects, and so on.
You can find out more about the competition conditions, metric calculation and other details on the competition website: imat2011.yandex.ru
Our LookLikeIt team took 12th place in the final stage with a result of 0.967, which we are very happy and proud of ourselves, as we lost to VERY strong opponents .
A little later we will publish an article describing our methods for solving the problem, if it is interesting.
I want to sincerely thank Yandex for hosting such interesting contests and congratulate the winners!
