IT-festival "de: coded": Lviv, spring and Intel

A couple of weeks ago, I first heard about the de: coded IT festival . It has been taking place since 2006 in Lviv, and young people come to it from all over Ukraine who are interested in information technology, computers and everything connected with it. IT festival? What is it? From my own student experience, I can imagine a festival on “What?” Where? When? ”, KVN or some kind of student song show. And here is IT! What kind of miracle is this? I decided to see - and looked.

There is a direct flight from Moscow to Lviv. True, the ATR-72 turboprop aircraft flies there, which slightly increases the time in the air and enhances the experience. Nevertheless, when a pair of propellers spin under the wings, the impressions of the flight and - especially - the landings are more “analogous”. Also, the propellers transmit noticeable vibration to the body, so lovers of throat singing can easily achieve interesting effects on the joy of other passengers.

Three hours - and we are in Lviv. The airport is located within the city, and the center is only six kilometers away. Typical high-rise buildings of Soviet times are quickly replaced by very beautiful old buildings, and instead of asphalt under the wheels there is a paving stone covering almost all roads in the city center. It looks very beautiful, but motorists complain about the short life of the suspension of iron horses, and fashionable women on stiletto heels have a hard time.

Festival de: codedtook place in the Lviv Palace of Arts, a new building on Copernicus Street, built next to the famous Potocki Palace. Dmitry Oganezov and I arrived on May 5, while the festival was supposed to begin only on the sixth. Intel is a technological partner of the “de: coded” movement, and thanks to this we managed to get inside earlier than other guests. To say that work was in full swing means to say nothing: the guys at the Stakhanov pace set up two huge floors at once, organizing jobs for hundreds of participants, constructing a stage, a demo zone and a podium for the DJ.

Downstairs there were sleeping places: many de: coded guests arrived from afar with their sleeping bags. Particularly large-scale work was carried out to ensure wired Internet access: WiFi, of course, was also present, but many participants arrived with their stationary computers under the armpit. As far as I understand, it was impossible to predict the number of systems without WiFi in advance, so the organizers made a heroic decision to host Ethernet everywhere. The network was led through the air, tying wires to pre-stretched ropes. Sometimes hubs also hung in the air, which gave the design a special grace.

We left the palace of art at about eight in the evening, and at that time the volumes of unfinished were impressive. However, the organizers assured us that no one would go to bed until everything was ready for the start of the festival. And indeed - when we returned the next morning, the imperfections came across only in very already secluded corners. There were still relatively few guests and participants, but an Intel stand was already deployed in the demo zone, where you could feel mobile computers on modern versions of processors, including the Sandy Bridge family, communicate with Intel product trainers from the Ukrainian representative office, and also receive developer materials Software that they consider important to optimize their products to work effectively on all Intel solutions. They also showed WiDi wireless video transmission,

Say it will not be enough? Yes and no. Of course, but at world-class exhibitions, Intel is deploying more powerful stands. But in this case, it was important for the young guys not only to look at megafiles, but to better understand - what benefits will the new technologies bring in practice? During the round table, which was conducted by Dmitry Oganezov, a small survey was conducted that showed, let's say, a low degree of penetration into the masses at the places of the Core i3 / i5 / i7 processors. Many have a Core 2 Duo / Quad and Atom, but so far they are looking more closely at the new generation. And here they will show and tell, and they will advise the correct software for solving specific problems. Those wishing to watch and listen were typed decently.

Who knows, maybe these guys who looked at de: coded, future Steve Jobs, Linus Torvalds and Steve Ballmer?

In the neighborhood with Intel, stands Asus, Kingston, Facebook and several other smaller companies were also located. It is interesting that Facebook delegated to Lviv an impressive looking recruiter who questioned the audience if they were programmers, and immediately offered to go to work in sunny California. I don’t know how many Ukrainians she recruited, but the approach is funny.

The official opening of the festival was scheduled for 18-00, but then for technical reasons it moved to 21-00. Nevertheless, the people did not get bored and did their best to prepare for numerous contests. A complete list of them can be found in the official de: coded program , and I will list only a few:

    1. - “Such an attractive iron”
    2. - “Intel Music Competition”
    3. - Composing a keyboard
    4. - Mouse throwing
    5. - Riveting connectors
    6. - Shuttle run with keyboard and monitor

    de: coded

Of course, there were traditional competitions in FIFA, CS and other games, demonstrative dispersal of iron by aces with the subsequent provision of the opportunity to repeat their success by everyone (it was fun with liquid nitrogen!), Seminars by Intel, Adobe, Asus, Google, Facebook ... You know, I’m not inclined to idealize the “de: coded” festival: probably there are more abrupt shows and more order in world capitals (“an element of a healthy mess”, to use the terminology of Boris Grebenshchikov, was present in abundance).

In this store, located near the Palace of Arts, computers obviously started selling even before the revolution!

But, on the other hand, the guys almost enthusiastically organized a three-day festival, came up with a powerful program, brought representatives of large companies to Lviv, and the sponsors did not bring down herds for them - they searched, explained, and convinced them. And it turned out to be a real IT-holiday, not only entertaining, but also giving a lot of food for the mind. And this is not in the capital of Ukraine, but simply in one of the largest cities. Are there such enthusiasts in Vologda, Astrakhan, Saratov, Krasnoyarsk, Tambov? Personally, I have never heard of such, and in this case I would be glad to be a dunno ...

Before the start of his seminars, Dmitry Oganezov was a little worried. Especially before the first, held on the evening of the sixth of May. Nevertheless, the first day of the festival is not a day off - well, how will there be too few people willing to listen about Intel programs for developers? But no - there were so many guys that there weren’t even enough comfortable ottomans for everyone, I had to drag a few chairs from unoccupied workplaces. That evening, Dmitry talked about the Intel Software and Services Group, about the Russian part of the Intel® Software Network , about tools for developers, about blogs, and then went on to competitions for developers.

Firstly, it is cross: coded - a competition of applications for netbooks based on Intel Atom processorsconducted in conjunction with the “de: coded” movement. The task of the contest participants is to write an application that extends the familiar functions of netbooks and opens up new opportunities for their users. The participants who took the first three places, right at the festival, were awarded tablet computers on Atom. By the way, here are the names of the winners: Ivan Rudy, Mikhail Bobusky and Eugene, whose name the organizers promised to send us soon :). The stock of tablets in the warehouse still remained, so it was announced that the competition would be extended until mid-August.

UPD : Here are our winners: Ivan Rudy, Mikhail Bobusky and Eugene Soroka.

Another equally important competition is the Threading Challenge 2011, whose winners will go to the IDF in San Francisco. We already read about him., but many of the guys from Ukraine, not yet hooked on Habr, were interested in listening.

Of course, Dmitry also mentioned the international AppUp developer challenge with its mega-prizes . The guys in the audience heard about him and were actively interested - it’s better to take a flight on a fighter, or money. Nevertheless, $ 50,000 is a considerable amount, in Lviv you can buy a small office for the future software company ... In the final of the round table, a teleconference was organized with Dmitry terrorRyzhkov, who was at that moment in the distant Togliatti, who spoke about his victories in Intel contests, and that everything was honest there. And the fact that a specially trained technician constructed a projector mount during a teleconference, which made the picture gallop gaily along the rather big wall of the Palace of Arts, even added a certain charm.

    de: coded

The next day at 10 a.m. Dmitry already spoke in detail about AppUp, MeeGo and the development of applications running simultaneously on several platforms. A tablet walked through the rows on MeeGo, and Dmitry spoke with the guys in some kind of his own language, which was difficult for me, but they somehow felt very comfortable. Nevertheless, even my modest knowledge of the subject was enough to appreciate the beauty of the idea: in AppUp you can download applications written in C / C ++, Adobe AIR, Java and .NET, and they will work on netbooks and tablets , and other Atom devices like upcoming smartphones. It is worth mentioning that for such a cross-platform it is necessary to follow a number of rules, but the latter are clearly formulated and quite logical.

On May 7, Lviv began celebrating the city’s day, plus a football match Dynamo (Kiev) with local Carpathians took place on Saturday evening. No, this is not a quote from another post :) Just all of the above has dramatically increased the number of guests from Moscow who want to fly away the next day, May 8th. This, in turn, caused a total shortage of tickets, and we had to take them to the seventh. So - they almost stayed in Lviv until the ninth, because there was nothing left for the plane, but Dmitry continued to ask questions, and, accordingly, he continued to answer them - entertainingly and in detail. I won’t go into details (it’s still scary!), But after standing in a small traffic jam caused by the festive blocking of streets, we still managed to get to the airport, registering for the penultimate flight. To be honest, I didn’t want to fly away: the festival was gaining momentum before our eyes, and it seemed to us that we would not see the most interesting. Most likely, it was.

How can you guess that they go on de: coded?

Do you know what else pleased de: coded? Girls! They, of course, were noticeably smaller than the guys, but you can not name a depressing proportion. In addition, the girls were not good at it. It is so great that such pleasant exceptions are engaged in our boring craft for most women.

Many of us go to Kiev and the surrounding area on May holidays to see flowering chestnuts, sit in inexpensive cafes with excellent cuisine, and enjoy the sights. So all this in Lviv is in abundance. Maybe for a change, next year we will meet at "de: coded"?
