School of data analysis replenished with bioinformatics

  • From RSS

School of Data Analysis (SHAD) announces the next set of students. The aim of the School is to teach talented young people who are prone to exact sciences, the so-called Computer Science, its theory and practice. This is a two-year free training, during which students take both theoretical courses ("Discrete analysis", "Combinatorics", "Probability", "Complexity theory"), and completely practical ("Learning to program in C ++", "Java" , "Parallel and Distributed Computing"). At the same time, the main core of the program is “mixed” courses combining practice with theory (“Algorithms and data structures”, “Machine learning”, “Computer linguistics”, etc.).

So far, there have been two departments in ShAD - data analysis and computer science. The school opened in 2007 and managed to graduate 70 people. In the spring, the third edition will take place; about 60 students will receive Yandex certificates .

This year, we decided to start and finish the recruitment earlier, as the administration of the School has almost no vacation in the summer year. You can fill out the questionnaire and take the test from April 15 to June 30 on any day and at any time, and interviews will continue until July 20.

Our main news: ShAD is expanding. In autumn, a new branch opens - bioinformatics. It will be headed by Mikhail Sergeyevich Gelfand. Bioinformatics includes both mathematical and biological disciplines, therefore mathematicians who want to master biology can enter the department, and vice versa - biologists who love mathematics. Therefore, there will be two parallel competitions with different tests at the bioinformatics department - for mathematicians and for biologists. Mathematicians will pass the test along with all other SHAD applicants (four topics: mathematical analysis, linear algebra, combinatorics and probability, programming), but for biologists we are now preparing a separate test. It will include four topics: mathematics (counting derivatives and limits, simple combinatorics), genetics, general biology and linguistics. In the first semester of mathematics, they will take a "course of a young fighter" in molecular biology, and biologists, respectively, the beginning of mathematics. The main program, actually bioinformatic, will be common. More information about the new department (program, teachers, recruitment conditions for biologists) will appear onShAD site soon.

This academic year, it is also planned to launch in St. Petersburg the joint program of ShAD, the CS-club POMI RAS and the Academy of Modern Programming . We will write about the details of the new initiative very soon.
