Google’s satellite carrier launched in 2013

Google operates in various areas, one of which is the provision of communication services. This year, the corporation created the satellite communications operator O3b Networks, which will begin to provide communications services in 2013. $ 1.2 billion was allocated for the development of the company, and the main area of work of O3b Networks is the provision of satellite Internet connection in developing countries. This company, by the way, was created back in 2008, even money was allocated, and considerable, for the development of the project, but the crisis prevented it from starting work, and target activity began only now. Let's hope that this time nothing will hinder this project - all the more so since quite significant investments have been received, as mentioned above.

Currently, work is underway to create the necessary communications satellites, eight of which will be launched in the first half of 2013. These satellites, according to the plan, will provide reliable communication between stations of mobile operators in developing countries. O3b Networks satellites will act as a bridge between mobile operators in developing countries, providing reliable signal strength. The regions in which O3b Networks is going to operate have a very weak network infrastructure at the moment.

It is worth noting that in addition to Google, companies such as SES, Liberty Global and HSBC Bank are participating in the project. SES is currently the largest company in the market of satellite commercial services. Satellites for the project will be created by Thales Alenia Space.

The project outlines several stages. So, the first phase of the project includes the launch of satellite communications for those countries in Africa and Asia that are along the equator line. “Internet access is very difficult here. Firstly, there is no access to the main Internet routes, and secondly, there is no serious investment in creating a wired infrastructure. O3b will bring multi-gigabit Internet to these markets, and it doesn’t matter whether the country is in the center of the continent or is it a small island state, ” commented one of the founders of O3b, Greg Wheeler.

The second stage is work with local telecommunication companies, which will be leased communication channels provided by satellites. It is worth noting that in some regions where O3b Networks will operate, there is no Network at all. The total number of countries with which O3b Networks will work is 150 states, these are countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. It seems that it is Google, and not the government of technically undeveloped, so to speak, countries that will be able to include such countries in the infrastructure of the global Internet.
