Stanford IT Department - My Impressions
In the distant 2006th year, for a month and a half, I worked at the Department of Computer Science (Computer Science Department - cs.stanford.edu) at Stanford University (Stanford University). Stanford is one of the best universities in the United States and around the world, and the Department of Computer Science is deservedly considered the forge of personnel for Silicon Valley. From it came the founders of the founders of Sun, Yahoo, Google and many other notorious IT companies. By the way, an interesting story happened with the founders of Google Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Initially, the search engine was located on a subdomain of the university site, but when its traffic exceeded half of the university’s traffic, Google founders were gently asked to transfer their search engine, which started their independent navigation. In general, the university made an indelible impression on me,
As I said, at the end of 2006 I went to California to study and work in the group of Professor Phil Levis - The Stanford Information Networks Group (SING). I settled in the town of Palo Alto directly across the road from Stanford. The first time I entered the territory of the university, I was struck by its vast territory and good organization, there is a stadium for American football, many educational buildings, libraries, residential houses for students and teachers on the territory. On the territory of the university organized the movement of buses (and several routes).
All houses, whose roofs are visible in the photo, belong to the University Library University Church (which even hosts students' weddings) David Packard Electrical Engineering Building Just a view
University founders But my goal was the Computer Science Department, which bears the name ... attention ... of William Gates. And all because he donated several tens of millions of dollars to build this building. That's how it is customary for them. After meeting with the professor, I was assigned a scientific task, provided the necessary equipment, an office and an Internet connection were allocated, and the work began to boil. Then there was a month during which I worked diligently so that there was something to show at the reporting workshop. There was only time left to study the surroundings and the faculty itself. Stands with various information are hung around the entire building of the faculty and museum exhibits are exhibited. Once Apple was such a "Silicon Valley Map"
“Internet Map” - how it was made up, I did not quite understand, but it’s still interesting. The memory cell from a computer in the 60s, the memory capacity is 1630 bytes. 1968 duplex modem. 150 baud. There was a vacancy announcement on one of the stands, I think the Khabrovsk people will be interested in training and solving these problems. I had a very interesting and colorful neighbor, whom, unfortunately, could not be met. At the time of his absence, I could not, not take a picture of his office. There is also a sleeping place. He looks, by the way, to match his workplace, a crumpled white T-shirt, a beard and sloppy jeans. But all this was a general impression, now I will try to briefly summarize the main points. Education
The level of education is very high, there is no doubt about that, just look at those who graduated from Stanford, and among them: Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Donald Knuth, Nicklaus Wirth, founders of Yahoo and Sun, among physicists there are 19 Nobel laureates; the list goes on and on. But such an education is worth a lot, Stanford is one of the most expensive US departments. The estimated cost of a year of study at Computer Science is about $ 47,000.
After visiting the university, I wanted to go there to graduate school, which is not as difficult as it seems. It is necessary to pass the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) - an all-American test for applicants to graduate school. One test should be general, another special, depending on the faculty you want to attend. If you have high scores, you can try to find a grant for training.
But, if you entered Stanford, then you will have to study very hard. My “temporary colleagues” - Koreans, began to prepare for a translation exam in a month and crammed textbooks all day. It was unusual for me. Studying, especially in graduate school, is given quite a lot of time and they take it quite seriously.
A lot of Koreans and Hindus study at the Faculty of Computer Science, they feel much more than Americans, especially when it comes to graduate school.
Silicon Valley
Stanford is located in the center of Silicon Valley, which stretches from San Francisco to San Jose and this is very noticeable. Density of IT enterprises per sq. Km. rolls over. During the time spent there, I managed to visit the offices of Google (left the strongest impression), Intel, Apple and others. Everything around you resembles where you are.
Spirit
The spirit is the most important thing that is in this place and just for the sake of it it is already worth going there. It is difficult to explain this in words, but you immediately begin to feel it as soon as you get there. Everything around is saturated with ideas that you constantly feed on, constantly learn something new. It is very useful to communicate with like-minded people. When you cook among innovators and purposeful people, you get enormous experience, which can then be put into practice. You return from this place with a heap of ideas and great enthusiasm to do what will turn the industry upside down.
PS: Sorry if it turned out a little messy.
