“Hewlett-Packard is about to close the Windows 7 Tablet (Slate) project,” TechCrunch reports

“Hewlett-Packard personally“ nailed ”his much-talked-about tablet based on Windows 7, a source tells us that has received some information on this topic. The device, as we recall, was presented to the public by Steve Ballmer at CES 2010, held in January this year, and was supposed to go on sale in mid-2010. But our source says that HP was not satisfied with Windows 7 as the operating system for the tablet (about this CrunchGear already mentioned a few months ago) and interrupts the project.
HP may also abandon Intel's hardware for its tablet, simply because it consumes too much power. This in itself may cross out Windows 7 as the OS for the device.
So, what will choose HP as the operating system? Take a look at the devices based on the OS from Google, which have already been announced . Also, HP seems to be going to use Palm's webOS . They said that this OS was interesting to them earlier and that they would probably continue experiments on its adaptation for tablets.
Will WebOS be a successful tablet operating system? This seems unlikely in light of the dominance of Apple's closed OS and the growing popularity of open Android and Google's ChromeOS. To get the support of third-party webOS software developers, HP will have to sell a lot of devices, and it’s still unclear what they will get in response to their efforts. HP is good at manufacturing and selling hardware, but not operating systems.
We have already requested comments from HP. “
