ThinkPad x200s Review

    Thinkpad

ThinkPad - a line of laptops (portable computers), manufactured by IBM until 2005. The ThinkPad division is currently part of Lenovo, which acquired the corresponding division of IBM. Development is carried out in Tokyo, Japan. Winners of numerous awards, IBM laptops are considered the most reliable business laptops.

The characteristic “angular” design of laptops was developed at a research center in Japan. Traditionally, the hinged display is held by strong all-metal brackets, while it itself is equipped with additional “stiffening ribs”, which, when the lid is closed, fix the display, preventing it from bending under external pressure. The notebooks look like a traditional Japanese wooden bento box used by the Japanese to transport delicate foods such as sushi and sashimi. (c) Wiki

    Caution traffic!

To be honest, I liked the laptop right away:

Small size. It is not as small as some netbooks, but it is quite mobile and very light. Only 1.35 kg without battery. 12 inch screen with a resolution of 1440x900. 6 hours of work. WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The case is made of a matte rough material, which, judging by the specification, is magnesium. To be honest, frankly annoying glossy details on laptops. On this remarkable case, unlike gloss, no traces of hands remain.

As you can see in the photo above, the x200s do not have a touchpad. Its place is taken by a normal full-size keyboard.
The touchpad functions are performed by a red "little thing" in the center of the keyboard. For those who do not know, it is called TrackPoint.

    image

It is a small rubber joystick and is very convenient to use. By the way, before, he was very often present on laptops if my memory serves me right.

2 interchangeable nozzles came to the TrackPoint in the kit.

    image

The right one is a nozzle that feels like a skin nulevka with rare grain. The left one is an analogue already installed but with a wider hat. Preference was given last.

Under the space are buttons that replace the right and left mouse buttons. The center button performs the scroll function. After clicking it, you can scroll through the page with a trackpoint.

In a nutshell about the keyboard. Since she is not the smallest it is really convenient to work with her. Of the minuses, I would probably mention the traditional left fn and the fact that Russian and English letters are drawn in the same color. The latter for some may not be the most successful solution, although I have been typing in a semi-blind way for a long time and only occasionally look at the keyboard.

Continue the inspection =). On the left side of the laptop there is a charging socket, a cooling output, a usb socket, a vga connector (by the way, note that it has the ability to fasten the vga cable with bolts.), A lan cable socket, another usb and a network interface switch. (by the way, about 5 minutes were spent searching for him).

A few words about charging. That's it, in my opinion, it “falls out” of the overall picture for the worse.

    image

Besides the fact that it is rather flimsy (although it doesn’t affect the quality of the contact.) It is made of gray plastic and, to be honest, it caused me to associate with the old Soviet 6-pin tape recorder.
As suggested in the comments, "flimsy" is like a special chip. It allows you to protect the socket from breakage, no matter how you press the plug, it will simply bend and pop out of the socket.

On the right side are usb, 3.5mm jacks for headphones and a microphone, a closed modem connector (permanently closed, there is no modem in this configuration), a slot in which you can insert additional hdd (ssd) (As dlinnbly corrected, in fact, no additional one is inserted, and the main one, that is, this is a stub that is removed to replace the hard drive.) andKensington Castle .
On the front panel there is nothing but a card reader and latches.
But the lid of the laptop contains 3 indicators: battery, network and sleep.

    image

Well, what I considered the longest is the bottom of the laptop.

    image

Above you can see the empty place of the battery compartment. In the lower part behind the bars you can see the speaker. and evenly spaced service bolts and spillway holes. Yes Yes! it is the weir. If liquid enters the keyboard through these openings, it will leave the laptop.
In addition, you may notice a strange oblong nest.
    image
It allows you to connect a laptop to the dock.
    It looks something like this.
    image
After connecting it, the laptop “acquires additional ports”
    image
By the way I will be very happy. if you tell me the purpose of the nest under usb and to the right of lpt.
Which is very convenient for work and home. I came, put the laptop, and I do not need to pick up a second monitor, speakers, printer and other devices. To my great regret, the IBM thinkpad docks do not fit Lenovo = (
    image
Now I’ll tell you about the features of the laptop.
As I wrote above, the case is made of magnesium alloy, now I add that it has a fairly strong frame that allows you to do something like this (it seems this photo is in all the large descriptions of this model)
    image
Do not try to repeat it with your laptops!
As you can see in the photo above, the hinges of the screen mount look pretty ugly, but they cope with their task just fine.
By the way, another interesting feature is the keyboard backlight. It is here made in the form of a light bulb that turns on from the keyboard.
    Backlit.
    image
    And without her.
    image
A few words about power. The battery in the kit was apparently 6-cell. Since it “sticks out” of the case, it has its own rubber feet, which allows the laptop to stand as firmly as with a smaller battery.
    image
Probably the only thing that gives noticeable play in this laptop is the battery. She shamelessly staggers in the nest despite the fact that all the latches are pushed in.
This version of the battery allows the laptop to work about 6 hours with yota (built-in module) in the mode of Internet surfing and watching videos for 30 minutes.

    Equipment.

In general, nothing special. (The power supply did not get into the picture.)

    At the end ..

I deliberately did not talk about the stuffing of the laptop, since its configurations are different. From 25 (just this one) to 49 thousand ( on the market ).

The laptop was taken to a good friend on an expedition to the Arctic (here and see how he shows himself ;-)).

Personally, I have two things missing for this laptop.
    • 1. Web cameras. (in this configuration)
    • 2. Fingerprint scanner (in this configuration). I certainly understand that few people need this, but I want to protect my data in the event of a laptop loss. And also fingerprint authorization is now supported by many services including webmoney.
    • 3. The possibility of upgrading vista to windows 7 (the seller said that this does not apply, although I do not know the rest to be honest), but this is a trifle.

The laptop is very strong, lightweight, comfortable, long-lasting. These qualities in my eyes make it almost ideal as a working laptop system specialist.

PS: my first normal post on Habré. I will be glad to justified criticism) Thank you for the
