US Department of Defense buys PlayStation 3

The US Department of Defense has ordered 2,200 PlayStation 3 consoles for a supercomputer. It seems that the available military cluster of 336 PS3 running under Linux was not enough.

The calculation of the warrior is simple. A 1U server with two 3.2 GHz processors can cost up to $ 8000, while two consoles will cost about $ 600. The difference in performance between the PS3 processor and 3.2 GHz IBM Cell is only 50GFLOPS. And the craftsmen who can use an order of magnitude cheaper consoles of no less efficiently expensive servers can be found in the US Department of Defense.
